Sorry to hear this Brent...

I'll pray at the shrine and ask the gods to have mercy. Perhaps all you need is a bottom end refresh? You may want to do a compression/leakdown test to verify top-end integrity. Hopefully, it won't be too bad. You will ride again!

I have the same optimism as Dave .... hoping the crank hasn't consumed more than the thrust bearing ...

Just make the drive up from Houma to New Orleans and "recreate" (A Southern term, from the noun "recreation"...) for a while!

After a few , it may temporarily get better!

Does anyone have a link to a web sight that has a good break down on pulling the engine? No matter what my final decision is the one thing that I WILLnedd to do is pull the engine and evaluate!

I want to be sure that I have TBF before I pull the engine. There was laready some dought in my mind and then a friend of mine who use to work at a mechanic shop comes over last night and says "Oh, no....... when you check crank play you're not supposed to hold pressure on the crank when you take your readings"
I need help again!
When I pry the crank forward, release the pry bar, zero the gauge, pry the crank backwards, release the pry bar and take the reading it is .010" (within spec.)
When I pry the crank forward, hold pressure on the crank with the pry bar, zero the gauge, then pry the crank backwards, hold pressure on the crank while I take the reading NOW I get .050" (out of spec.) Can someone tell me definatively how is the reading supposed to be taken?

Jim, I looked at that before I did the measurement but can I assume since it says nothing about holding pressure I'm not supposed to take the measurement that way? SO next question? where does THAT extra play come from?

When i took my measurements i didt hold any pressure. Just pried it in and out and took the measuremenst 4-5 times for consistancy...all the same. No pressure held.

Brent, sorry but what you related from your friend doesn't seem to make sense, unless you are measuring on the flywheel near the point where you are prying. A more ideal way to measure would be as follows:

1) Position dial indicator so that it is touching a front pulley, or the crankshaft itself -- make sure the indicator is near the middle of it's range.

2) At the flywheel, pry the crank all the way forward and hold it there while someone zeros the indicator.

3) Now, still at the flywheel, pry the crank all the way to the rear and hold it there while someone reads the indicator.

4) Repeat a couple times, swap positions with your helper and repeat a couple times to be really sure.

What your friend said only makes sense if you are measuring at some point that can potentially flex while you are prying. What worked for Tony may or may not work for you -- it depends whether your crank moves away from the thrust surface of the bearing when you let up off the prybar.

The extra play you are seeing comes from either something flexing as you pry, or because the crank does not stay against the thrust bearing when you release the prybar. Using the method I described above, no amount of prying by any mortal should change the reading significantly, because in that scenario there is nothing to flex and you are consistently measuring the full amount of end play.

Thanks, Dave. I did the test just as you described. When I pry it forward it stops at a point and stays there but when I pry it back (aft) the dial indicator rears .050" I then release the pry bar and the reading changes to .010" and you can physically see the front pulley pop forwards. So unless someone has an explanation of why this is I have to assume that the crank is just settling back to a cretain position for some reason and that the correct measurment is .050" and not .010". which makes it bad..................... great!
