Default Re-paint?

My car is now 18 years old..............looks good but not pristine.

Do I repaint or refurbish somehow?

NEVER have your car painted if there's a reasonable alternative.

Does it need buffing or touch up ? Bumpers fading ? Enquiring minds want to know.

I rather spend the money to either make the 928 go faster or stop sooner. Anything else is irrelevant! Then again when I bought my it '85 already had a "few" paint issues.

Malcolm
A top notch detail will make most 928's look far better....if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself...there are professionals who can do it for you...look for a high end detailer that specializes in high end cars.... Talk to Anthony Orosco in the concours forum...he does excellent work! Bummer is he's in texas!

If the detail doesn't improve things....then its time to consider a repaint....but those are very pricey.....Minimum $5k

Maaco has a special $200!

I have been considering a paint job myself, from what I'm told a PO's ex keyed the car and she got it good, an X on the roof and a semi circle on the hood and a line down the side, the paint looks great but you have to get past the key markings. Is it possible to fix that?

Guys,

repainting the 928 is not an easy task, ask me how i know. A good paint job including all the parts that need to be changed (gaskets and all) will top you about $13k. Still NOBODY can match Porsche's paint from the factory... i mean they spent hours and hours and hours painting the car and detailing it... no body shop will ever invest this much time for perfection.
Still I think a 20 year old paint will start to oxidize and die sooner or later and will need to get a fresh coat (not including all the pitting). So it is a personal opinion. If you want to do it, plan to have a decent budget.

Sincerly,
Khaled

Ross,

If the paint is as good as you say it is, there are several ways fo fixing (paitning) only the scrathed up areas, the rest of the car will stay original. Dealers do this all the time to cars they buy at the auction.

The paint is great, it would be perfect if it wasnt for the scratches, someone put touch up paint on them and didnt do the best job in the world. Whats the cost of getting it "fixed" and who does it?

I have issues with some overbuffed paint on my top. An estimate from a top paint shop here in the South Bay Area was $10,000 and that includes all new gaskets and rubber. And they want the car for two whole months.
Add to that the cost of a shrink because of the long wait and it becomes outrageous ( and I wonder if I would ever get it back in value.....I doubt it....unless it is comfort of knowing that it is fresh and no door dings are there.....for awhile). I find it hard to justify that kind of paint for a daily driver here in lala land.

Search for BeerBurner's story. He did the prep, Maaco did the painting, and it turned out pretty good... but I would only recommend it for a car with a destroyed paint job.

Ross, look up Langka. Somebody posted in the 928 forum recently about their experience with it.

2 months is not that bad. My car literally spent 3 months. My bills totalled 8500 for the paint, 3k for parts (including new H4 headlights and new fog lenses). It is back at the body shop for front bumper rework, and sanding and all that... been there 3 weeks i know how you WILL feel.... i miss my shark, but it is a head turner. Next on my list an interior cleanup and re-dye, followed by new dash and pod from Porsche (and maybe a center console), and while i am at it, i want my black vinyl on the door panels redyed, install 89+ rear quarter trim, new nakamichi stereo, express up/down window control from paragon... oh did i forget, as soon as i get it back this week, i am taking it to Exotic Motorwerks so Dan can replace my TT and bearings (too much vibration, cant take the shaking no more), new discs and pads, maybe check my wheel bearings while i am at it... oh i am getting off topic.. but it seems my baby is always being fixed (but then again i am a perfectionist... and you need to be with those gems).... aaaahhhhhhh

My PO had my shark re-sprayed. It looks like a MAACO job. Orange peel on the roof, a drip in the B pillar and overspray on the door jambs and hinge areas so bad it feels like sandpaper. The paint was so think on the front bumper that it cracked and fell off when someone in my garage bumped into me. Looks pretty from a distance though.

Someday, I'll hit lotto and get it done the right way.

From the responses I believe the concensus is to repair the original paint. I'm definately NOT spending +$10k US for a paint job and waiting 2 months..........thats my supercharger money! Imo000, I agree with your point but I've done most of the upgrades; SC to come.

Now its the end of Jan we only have 2-3 months of winter left so lots of time to ploish but I have no clue where to start. I've read about clay bars etc etc but I'd prefer some 101 direction: ie start with this, go to this and this and finish with this that I can do in my home garage...........a home detail job.
