Do you have a random orbit buffer? http://www.griotsgarage.com/index.jsp is a good website The Porter Cable is very good....but random orbits are not great for heavy duty polishing...but work fine for most amatuer users....(like me)

Heres a good starting point
Wash
claybar (I use mothers claybar buy griots is very good too)
wash again to remove residue
Polish....P21 paintwork cleaner...mequiars scratch X....Griots 1-2-3....3M are all good depending on how much polishing you need..DO NOT use rubbing compound..its too abrasive
Possibly many more polishing steps (remember in the middle of the polishing steps the car will look worse..don't worry)
Follow up with a good high quality wax/sealant with some cleaners (Mequiars Hi-tech, Mequiars #26, Eagle Nano-wax, griots paint sealant)...wait one day
put on a coat of Rejex...wait another day http://www.corrosionx.com/rejex.html

You now have a very very shiny 928! This is the process I use when I prep my car for a concours...It will take about 1.5 days, plus "curing" time...but it is worth it! Far cheaper than a repaint too

This is how my paint looked after a wash with dawn soap, clay bar, and then the follow up wash with mild car wash soap. I did this prep for putting some rejex on but still have not bought the rejex.

I don't think I have any of the old pics on this puter, but when I find some I'll post them up. This car when I bought it from the PO looked like an ideal canidate for a repaint. The PO never stored it inside or under a car cover. He lived on a gravel road out in the sticks, with fir trees all around. I spent a week when I first got it back in '03 just trying to get all the tree sap and fir needles off the car. I still get the occasional fir need out from under the rear spoiler when I wash it.

From your description you started with a worse conditioned paint than I have at present. Off to the local NAPA to see if they have a clay bar..................I'm inspired.
