Paul,
Nice money saving idea.
However the boots are pretty cheap IIRC. An Audi part number I think.

More research on the Corteco MMs
They are also made in India and not the USA.
When is this offshore sourcing going to stop??

For anybody who is interested here are the pages from the Corteco cat.
The files were to big I will get them posted later.

Sorry to say that it's simply not going to stop. But who knows.. with a bit of luck in a 100 years time they will out source to us.

Default Hydraulic MM Cross Section

Thanks to some help from Jim M and his band saw I finally have been able to see inside one of the hydraulic MM.
This example is made by Corteco.

As you can see there are three large cavities within the MM. As far as I can tell all were filled with liquid. The liquid is water with a little glycol added for anti freeze purposes.
The design is such that there is a major potential leak path around the circumferance of the metal to metal seal.
Once the liquid leaks out there is nothing left to support the weight of the engine and the MM collapses.
The solid MM is exactly that solid. Big chunk of rubber to support the weight and attenuate vibration and movement. Very little chance of failure and no collapse.

Good info Roger! I still have a spare set of anchor MM (hydraulic) in case the set we put in the GTS fails one day. Solid rubber seems to be the longer lasting solution without less comfort.

Can someone cut up a supposed solid mount so we can see? Maybe the supplier - Carl?

Thats next on the list Brendan. I have plenty of them. Had to order the Hydraulic unit separately as I never use them anymore.

Uh, Roger, you asked earlier:
"When is this offshore sourcing going to stop??"

So, are you divesting your (German) stable in favor of
American iron ?? ;-]

All the world wants to know (so we can line up for the auction)

G'luck.

macreel,
I must have been dreaming or drinking when I made that statement.
It sucks to be getting old.

Roger,

Anyone who tours an OB across the desert can't be old.
(enjoyed your (& Ed's) mini-odyssey).

Yea...tell me about it. Here we are driving cars that are older than most college freshmen...and they can even afford to buy them. Just add new $18 motor mounts and voila'.....good to go (not!).

If you are able to supply the part number I would be very grateful, as I'm sure my repair won't last for ever.

UKKid35

The ball joint boots are an Audi part. Upper/lower ball joint boots are P/N 431.407.377A which is the number 928Intl and 928 Specialists have listed. Got mine from 928 Specialists and have used them on two different 928's. The fit is perfect.

Many thanks Jim - much appreciated.

A couple of years ago "Erik - Denmark" sent me a spare boot, I said I'd buy him a drink at some future 928 event. I didn't find out until later that he was terminally ill.

I have a large stock of the Corteco Solid Motor Mounts complete with the right hardware as well as the RealGasket - silicone oil pan gasket.
MM's are $30 each and the RealGasket is $40 plus shipping.
Thanks,
Roger
