I said to heck with trying to find solid mounts and went to 928motorsports.com and bought a set. $110.00 including shipping. Now, I don't want to put them on because people have said such bad things about how onerous a job it is. One of these days...

When I bought my car, the PO included a set of motor mounts he had purchased but never installed. They're from Devek. I have the receipt......for $350.00 ......which is listed as a "SPECIAL PRICE"!!!. Are these things made of titanium or perhaps the fabled unobtanium? For that price, they ought to add a few HP don't ya think. Anyway, they're going in Monday. We'll see how they do. Perhaps a dyno run will be in order after the install.

Roger,

Just shook them again and no slosh. Even had a younger pair of ears in the household check them to be sure. He confirmed my view but I'm sure is talking my wife about how 928 ownership accelerates senility. I suspect they will conclude that my progression to small things now amusing my mind will be an improvement over 20 year old Porches and sailboat racing. But I digress.....

I didn't mention earlier that both are marked Made in India. Frankly, I'm just happy they are both the same rather than on SR and one hydraulic.

I accept your earlier arguments that SR is less likely to fail than the hydraulics. For that reason I'm inclined to stay with them.

It would be nice to know if the solid transmit any more vibration than the hydraulic. I can't imagine that it would be much different and certainly either must be better than the current direct transmission between the pan and the crossmember.

Any object or subject comparison results would be welcomed I'm sure by all. I'll put them in in the next couple of weeks in any case.

Doug,
What gives you ownership to senility - you are as old as the women you feel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have both hydraulic and solid - no difference so far - time will tell.
Wait until you have done the MM exchange - its like a night and day difference.
Nearly as good as sex!~!!
Duh - whats sex????
If my wife read this I would have to sell all my cars - please don't tell.

Priceless. I have to remember that one the next time my wife says.....no. never mind , I do remember what sex is and I would miss it.

Where is Double Oaks? I spent 10 days golfing near San Antonio in February. Annual trip. I love that country.

Hydraulic is actually a misnomer. Since fluids are nearly incompressable, and if you slosh it around you will hear it, the mount is actually a combination hydro-pnuematic. It is the air within that make the mount dampen vibration.

In theory, the hydraulic mount would be better able to damp engine vibration, but there's a lot of harmonics, and mathematical computations to determine the effectiveness over solid rubber. You will notice a giant improvement even with the rubber mounts, and IMHO they will be more durable.

For those of you that think Porsche parts are outragiously expensive, I am now serching for a throttle cable for my Beech Bonanza. Current price quote is $2500. That's two thousand five hundred. I am closing in on a suitable replacement for only $375 but no guarantees yet.

Finished my motor mount replacement today using the Anchor mounts. What an improvement! I am surprised how much engine vibration I was getting through the well crushed old ones.

It took me eight hours but didn't do much else under there other than some cleaning of contacts. I'm glad the see on close inspection that my original rack (with 146,000 kilometers) is not leaking. After completing this job I have no reservations tackling the rack myself once it does start to leak. I would estimate that two reasonably mechanical people who have thoroughly sutdied the procedure could do the motoer mounts in less than six hours. I would recommend getting the car a little higher than the 18 inches of clearance I had on my 3 ton jack stands.

Thanks to those (Tony, Greg) who have posted step by step instructions. It increased my confidence and provided a clear rod map to the job. One modification from the piror posts is that I didn't have to remove either the rack hoses or the steering universal. I started removing the universal but was having trouble breaking the clamp connection. I thought I would try to remove the drivers side mount and voila, it came out easily. Saved a lot of headache putting the steering back together.

Many thanks to those like Rog who encouraged me to take this on. It has changed the character of my 928 and improved my driving experience.

I too was pleased at the smoothness of the car after my MM job. I had to get an alignment after I did mine. Did you have any alignment issues with yours Doug?

Jim,

The alignment seems good although I notice my wheel is little off center now. Attributed that to the amount of play in the rack mounting holes before I tightened it.

I'll have to check the alignment when I get out on a stretch of good pavement....a rare commodity around these parts it seems.

Well done on the MM - your next lesson is doing your own alignment. Very doable.

So how does one center the rack for an alignment if it got shifted during the
MM procedure?
Would the rack centering bolt still work?

One more data point: My MM's arrived today, Indian, solid, utterly identical to those shown in Spinaker's post #132.

Rob,

Are you going to keep your mounts from rock auto? I found that they are available from autozone for $45 each i believe. Mine are made in USA and much nicer looking then the ones i got from RA. I only mention this cause I was dissapointed by the mounts i got from RA, I would buy them from autozone as they have a lifetime warranty, although i wouldnt look forward to replacing them if they were defective. I also mention this cause i have heard someone mention on the board, perhaps in this thread that they had the anchor type mounts and they collapsed within a year or so. Take that for whatever its worth, i just like the idea of a lifetime warranty. I remember they used to have the same policy with brake pads and they still may but you would wear them out take them in and get a new set for nothing. I am sure you pay a little more in the beginning but i like buying a replacement once and not having to buy it over and over.

I don't know whether its interesting or not..but after working with the Rock Auto tech regarding the aforementioned shipments of mixe mount-types...he called Anchor. Supposedly the solid mounts are acknowledged as prone to early failure...so they actually encourage use of hydraulic mounts. That seemed counterintuitive to me, so I double-checked with the tech and he affirmed that the solids were prone to failure. Know way to know whether or not he got the story backwards, but he seemed sure.
I'm referring to OEM installs, YMMV.
