Default Competition For The 928?

You know, I think one of the cool things about a 928 is its near total lack of comparable competition.

Even today, if you really want a true exotic Grand Touring car that:

1. Is gorgeous,
2. Is powerful,
3. Can carry two people long distances quickly and in real comfort,
4. Has wonderful handling despite the level of comfort,
5. Has easily sufficient luggage capacity, and
6. Has a proven track record of reliability...

What are your choices? Aston Martin? Maybe Bentley Continental. And the Mercedes SL class. Any others?

And think back to the early years of the 928 - I can't think of ANY comparable car on the market at that time.

Can you tell I love my shark?!

Without the luggage thing, a new corvette would do that. I have thought many times on this.

If you add in "upper and lower front A-arm suspension" I think it could become more difficult. But 1G cornering from a vette is 1G cornering.

What's wrong with a G35? Other than not having the pricetag to be an exotic, it's basically what those other cars you listed are. Otherwise, an M6. How about a 911?

Don't you have a G35, bigs?

When I totaled my 89 GT I seriously considered a BMW M3. To me it has many of the same attributes of the the 928, but is much more modern.
BUT, I chose a GTS and am very happy with my decision!

Yes, as a matter of fact I do! A fine little car in many ways. But I would describe it more as the "poor man's 911." More of a nimble little sports car or sports coupe than a true GT car.

And, its suspension (along with the low profile tires) makes it somewhat of a bone-rattler for a long trip.

So I'd put it, along with the 911, in the sports car category rather than a grand touring car. Not bad, just different.

Edit - yeah, I guess you'd have to include an M6.

Bigs, as regards the 928, you are talking about an affair of the heart, at least as far as I am concerned. The first time I saw one, I wanted to own it. I was 26 at the time. I purchased a 2 by 4 foot picture of one and hung it on the wall of my office(s), as I made my way through my career. Finally at 40 years old, a vice president and my first IPO under my belt, I bought Gretch.

I will admit to having looked at lots of other cars over the years, nearly bought a bently turbo and had the same brief thoughts about several other high end cars. I never did act on those thoughts because deep down inside, the 928GT is the pinicle of automobile beauty for me, and I have settled in for the long haul with this car..........not to say there are not some nice automobiles out there, just that it is very unlikely I will ever fall for a car as hard as I did for my 928.

Are you talking about yesteryears prices comparable to the 28 or the present value of the 2-8? -

If your comapring yeateryears prices (although this may be a little bit of a "reach") to todays market.

The DB9 comes to mind although I probably will never ever be able to aquire one ... were talkin serious Bank on that one ........
The New M5 is BRUTAL although you need a degree in Computer Science to operate it.
Of Course the Ls7 - C6 Vette without the "refinements" such as the 928.
Then you have the future Porsche "Panamera" (even in 4 dr trim) it might be lethal. (If it comes to light)
The New Ford GT40 - even the reps are pretty decent
Acura NSX - Please .............fast but IMO ..........lacking the goods that deservces respect (and yes I Have been humbled by one on the race track so no flaming on that one - please)
Any of the AMG class Benzs - E55 maybe - sweet/ modern and wicked fast.
A little under budget but the Nissan 350Z - with Mods - could be a shark killer.

Thats it for now .................

Except for the GT40 and the Z-06, those are all very heavy cars. When properly built, the 928 can be honed down to 3000-3200 and have gretch's 500+hp. For a total of I'd say, start to finish 30,000 dollars, ,maybe 40,000.

I think the latest 996 and 997 are a lot more like 928 than like 911.

Hi Bigs: Even though this isn't the forum I hang in, I just had to say I admire your passion for your car. I have to say that I absolutely love Sharks, they are just awesome. I don't see to many modern cars that are really nice touring cars, that are reasonably priced too. I own a 2005 Maseretti Quattroporte, with the F1 paddles, and it's a fabulous car. But still, I'd take a late year Shark over it. That's just my $.02 cents.

Sorry to interupt your thread.

Lets see, at 18psi, a 5.0L 928 motor should do..

Well, stock 320hp flywheel doubles in a hypothetical 14.7 above atmo, so that would be 640, and then add 3.3 more psi, maybe lose more efficiency there, 700hp? And you are at 461 with 3 liters? How long do you have that torque? Is it a mountain or a plain?
