Well, Holden is a GM subsidiary, but the Australians did all the work on that car.

Erich,

Sounds as though you were at least closer than me. Do you do any flying these days? It's great that your dad was a Hun driver - they have one on a stick at Mansfield, OH where they used to fly out of as well.

As for the F-4, I was really hoping that the G's would stick around - maybe with a turn of the century update or something along those lines. They were the quinessential Weasels, that's for sure. I was fairly positive that I would never hear another pair of J79's at full song until one day at UPT a Luftwaffe bird crossed the center runway at Columbus AFB on a low approach... you should have heard the car alarms go off! It brought back a lot of good memories.

The Hustler... now that was a machine! My dad actually has a lot of detailed memories of them as he can recall when they were up at Bunker Hill (now Grissom) in N. Indiana. I can only imagine what that thing sounded like on climb-out.

Yeah, no matter how you slice it, we both missed the good days, Erich.

I once spent several hours of a long morning on a hilltop watching flight after flight of, inter alia, F-4's attack the facing hillside. They dove in <100' over our heads, released their ordnance and pulled up and out of the valley on afterburners. We could see the top of the crew's heads below us. The brave but foolish, obviously well-dug-in mortar crew of bad guys kept shooting at them long after the hill was smoldering. Car alarms? I'm surprised the noise didn't make the NVA give up. It was moving head size rocks around on our hilltop. Close air rocks!

I have a more current friend who's partial to AC-130's and A-10's, having had his *** saved by both. My father-in-law was partial to P-51's for the same reason.

An AF friend of my Dad's told me that an F-4 scrambled from Lockbourne AFB (Columbus, Ohio) could be feet wet over the Atlantic in about fifteen minutes; and have about five minutes of fuel left.

I was over at a friends house yesterday. His sons friend was over, prpobably about 10 years old, the kid looked at the 928 GT smirked and said his grandmas Chrysler 300M has 20 more horsepower and could smoke the GT.

What the hell is wrong with kids today?

I have been giving this some thought and a used Ferrari 550 gives the 928 allot of completion to the GTS.

Look at the prices of low mile (under 25K) 94/95 GTS’s at $45-$50K you are paying a BIG premium for the low miles.

A 97 Ferrari 550 with 21k can be had for $89K with all the service up to date.

If you drive it and put 8k miles per year, the deprecation on the Ferrari and GTS will be about the same.

The 550 maintenance costs are around $3k per year (according to the guys on Ferrarichat) and the 928 is around $2k per year.

So the 928 is cheaper to run but IMHO the Ferrari is a better looking car plus it is a 485 HP V12 with a 6 speed transmission!!!

The 360 is a beautiful car but the 550 is so-so and the interior very tight. Put a supercharger on any 928 and the performance will match and the 928 has much better curves.

Ferrari 550 on Ebay

That being said, you have to lay out 2x as much up front, and even though %-wise the deprecation is the same, it's once again 2x the amount of money you're losing. There's also the possibility the bottom will fall out of the GTS market, I'm going to guess that's less likely with the Ferrari, especially as the 550 is pretty well regarded overall. Although there is an upside that the GTS market might keep going up. But we're not buying either of these to speculate, so the above probably ultimately doesn't matter.

How are the newer Ferrari's in terms of day-to-day use? All I hear about Ferrari's is how you drive them a bit and then fix them. Your description sounds like it can be used everyday with a regimen of routine maintence being the only requirement, just like the 928.

If I could afford it, my interest would be piqued. I really like the Maranello.

Not that many front engined Ferrari's made in the last 30 years. I bet time and their exclusivity will treat them well in future values.

one of my pcar wrenches also does pasta rockets... for years I've asked him if there was one that was comprable to the 928 in maintenance as I was willing to spring for the difference and other stuff on the f cars I really love (lines, sound, power is decent on many models) - but for over 6 years he has consistantely told me to forget it if I want a daily driver type car... since I'd be in his best interest for me to get one, I assumed he was being candid/honest...

still love the cars though....
