what a surprise - i did not realize how expensive these mounts are on our cars.. i just had them done. parts alone were $700.00 pair labor was $390 dollars. the only good part about the price is that the car runs alot smoother... i think i overpaid on the cost of the parts but labor sounds right..what do you think ?
thanks

Not sure what model you have, but 928spec carries the hydraulic mounts for ~$100. If you didn't care to pay the $1000, I guess it would be worth it considering your car runs alot smoother.

v-tach,
One of the benefits of membership, which you have, is the ability to search the forum for answers to our problems. If you'd done so before having your engine mounts replaced you would have discovered Anchor Ford truck mounts which cost about $30.00 each and which work perfectly in your 928.
I think you got a bargain on the labor.
I had the India- made Anchor mounts put in last July... still working fine, although some people say you should avoid the ones made in India (guess I'm the guinea pig). They were, as I recall, about 54 bucks each.

You got ripped on the parts, but the labor charge was very low unless they charge $50 an hour. Full factory list on the mounts is $630 a pair but I've bought them on sale for a lot less. This is not a fun job and takes 8-10 hours. Overall you did OK.
How's your oil pan gasket? This would have been the perfect time to replace that unless it is perfect as the procedures overlap almost completely
if you dont work on you own 928 you wil have to bend over and accept it .the price is not suprisig but im not familiar with that year . so your best bet if to find a mechanic knows and appreciates the 928 sounds corny , but someone with knowlage and respect for the car would be my choice thanks for listening
Is it possible that the mechanic knowss about the Anchor mounts too and used them in the install? To offset the cost difference, the labour charge was droppedand. This way the bill shows the Porsche mounts at the same time the owner will think he/she got a heck of a deal on the labour.
Tom Middleton and I just did this same job on an '84 this last weekend. It was 6 hours, which included modifying (drilling) the lower motormount frames for the guide pin on the Anchor mounts. (It is smaller and set in closer than the stock guide pin) The pin itself was gound down to a nub so it would catch the mount frame (so the bottom nut could be torqued) but wouldn't contact the actual crossmember (so the crossmember didn't have to be drilled). If we were using stock motor mounts (no mods) and if we were really hustling we probably could have banged it out in 5 hours.
Our shop has a cherry picker and a lift. I can't imagine doing this job without both and tip my hat to those that do the "bottle jack/shim the motor with spacers" method in their garages. There have been some reported failures of stock replacement mounts within a short period after installation. I think this is attributed to not having optimal tools to manipulate the motor and chassis during installation, resulting in serious prying/levering of the new mounts to get them installed.
I think your labor price is right in the ballpark.
