race weekend recap- Laguna Seca
Friday got off to a good start with my car being the second fastest car on the track. Unfortunatley that did not last as the majority of the front runners made some big improvements. Saturdays race was difficult for me as I had a limited supply of good used tires and I was saving the best for Sunday. I started 11th and got up as high as 5th but could not hold it as my tires went away and finished 7th. Sundays was looking more promising as the tires I was saving were almost 2 seconds faster and I was able to get up to 3rd overall and 1st in class. And to make matters even better Joseph was right behind me and Kibort was there at the finish with cold champagne.

Well at least it was fun Mark! Glad to see that you were one of the few representing sharks at Laguna Seca. Congratulations on first in class!

What is it with the limited supply of racing tires? Is that they are expensive, or there's only so many you can fit into the trailer to bring with you?

Pretty interesting race. both mark and joe ran 1:35.5 vs 1:35.7 for joe, and joe was hauling toward the end!! the 3 turbos in front were always in sight, and both Mark and Joe took 1st and 2nd in class! (R2R, top N/A unlimited class) good job.
As far as tire costs and event costs, that gets pretty expensive for a 6 lap POC race!! (they planned for 10 laps , still way way too short and some over sound racers didnt come in so they black flagged everyone, as they pre-agreed, and called it a day! )
It was just starting to get good, and it ended. POC has to get it together. I cant blame them for the field black flag move, as that was pretty tight that some of the infracting racers didnt come in, but 10 laps for a feature race is silly, especially when the have the entire event for themselves and only 4 run groups! At the leaders average 1:32 a lap, thats around a 15min race!!!! and then, with only 6 laps, i think their racing time was only about 8min!! If you just like track time, you get a lot of 20min run sessions throughout the 3day weekend, but if you live to race, $500 ENTRY + 500 for tires tires is $125 a minute, or about $200 per lap! pretty darn pricey. heck with the SpeedGT entry fee of $850. at least you get a 50min race!! ($32 bucks a lap) and $17 a lap for SCCA club racing.
it was good seeing mark and Joe out there, both bill and I were there to check out the race.
Hope to run in the event at Infinion Raceway, where Joe has to run 1:43.xx to win dinner from me again!

It was good to see Mark & Joe blasting around the track, even if the severe noise restrictions took their toll. Mark was running a full stock S4 exhaust, with the big rear muffler and stock tip hanging off the back. The car was nearly silent going by, with the greatest noise being the induction system. The final race was cut short, but there were times when Mark was dicing it up around turns with the top 3 and Joe stormed up toward the front group in the lst few laps. Both made some adventurous passes, like going wide into the dirt flying up and over turn 1.

Ive got a lead for you usedroadracetires@comcast.net - The cats name is Lee.
He quoted me a set of 245/45/16 - Hoosier Rs304 - with 90% tread life left for 270.00 plus shipping. Maybe he can work a deal for you.
Also - He sells a multiple of different brands. Toyo RA1's included

Mark... way to go. Congrats.
Maybe we can all pitch in and you can plant
rubber trees around the shop. Shade for lunch
and treads for the track.
G'luck.

all that money and some how the fat and lazy 928s go 1-2 and all others are just watching from behind. hmmm, got a 750hp turbo 911 or turbo powered cup car , you can beat them by a second or two. (those are some expensive seconds....... say, about $150k more
Dont get me wrong, i love the cup cars. but you cant take nothing away from the 928 with stroker and $3000 intake and some plumbing from home depot!
Im sure my car with a stroker and the intake would only be a second or so slower with no other mods. (as joe's and marks in previous forms has shown to be!)
someone should ring that guys bell about the recent 911 vs 928 competition

Great job as always Mark and Joe!! Someday I will make the trek out to Cali and see how the big boys play on the track. Could one of you give us a quick run down on what your competition was this past weekend? Type of Porsche race cars, HP/weight/$$$ so the rest of us can understand what you two are up against?
I remember being surprised with the class of machinery that was John Veninger's competiton at this years Sebring PCA races in GT2S when he came in third in the sprint race. 996 cup cars, 993 cup cars with a lot of $$$ in them and there was John V. in a very stock looking 928 with no wing except the standard S spoiler. There were favorable comments from some observers who were very surprised/impressed to see a stock looking 928 taking on such a field. Makes a 928 owner proud to see that happen.
For those that have never been on the track, it is a bit intimidating parking at the track entrance and seeing all these newer or hallowed Porsches all around your only 928. And this is only a DE! Then you start moving through the field and you start gaining respect for your 928 as it hangs with/passes these other Porsches, sometimes to the frustration of their owners! I can only imagine this feeling multiplied when your actually racing and beat your competitors in their cubic dollar machines.
Congratulations again!

Good work, boys! And with your cars all plugged up by sound suppression to run at Ninety-three DBs, yet! Wow. What a shame about the tire source drying up.. Hoosiers are not real race tires..they are DOT approved "compromise" tires, about probably 3 seconds per lap slower at most tracks on a big strong 928...
