Default End of A/C Odessy

I would like to especially thank Brian, Bill, Wally and Geoff -
Took car to Quality Imports, had receiver/drier and Expansion valve replaced, replaced 4 way connector (which broke in previous exploration and was jury-rigged), and viola- 66 degrees air. Then had heater totally disconnected, even though the bypass valve worked (thanks Geoff) and viola !! 49 degree air !!
It was onluy96 today but Saturday was 106.

A 928s4 with working air conditioner-life is GOOD.

Have decided Rennlist membership very valuable tool !!

Nice work. What did it cost for all that?

Let me know if you need your status to be updated to Rennlist Member.

I thought I bought a 2 year membership to Rennlist

The A/C odessy:
cost: $350 for A/C service and 2 lbs freon, +$ 673 today = $1023.

Given the 100 degree + summer, its worth it.

Mike:

Glad the expansion valve was the answer.

Not uncommon. The price was fair as well.

Congrats.

Are those numbers for a 134 converted system? I'm not even close, after the conversion on my '87 car!

Yeah, I'd like to know that as well; I have a receiver/drier and Expansion valve, as well as a new rebuilt compressor and all the "o"-rings to replace, and I'm wondering weather or not to go with 134a, or back to R-12; BIG price difference! Single system, thank goodness!

Congrats.
How was the heater disconnected? I continually have a differential between front and rear air temperatures.

The price isn't really all that different between R134a and R12. The labor is the same, only slightly different lubricants sometimes, althought the new double endcapped PAG apparently is about to be used in both systems.

Buy your R12 on Ebay and get an extra can just in case.

Good luck.

Exactly. You'll have to pry R12 out of my dead hands before changing to R134a.....

Get your 609 Cert to legally buy R12, (do a search on the web, several places to get it online.) Not that much $

Buy this book: http://www.acsource.com/index.asp?Pa...WPROD&ProdID=8 (or something similar)

Buy a decent set of gauges from the place above or Ebay.

Buy some R12 off of Ebay or local if possible.

Just about all the above can be had for around $150 or less. Read the book and do the work yourself.......it really is one of the easier things to do on a 928.

I have 40 degree air coming from my front vents on a 100 degree day. R12 simply cools faster and if you do the work yourself it is not expensive at all.....even compared to R134a.

I think the differences between R-12 and R-134a are a bit overblown. Cost of initial charge is only slightly less now with R-12 as a percenrtage of the total repair/refit costs. Performance on the S4+ cars with electric fans is not a factor in my limited experience. The big difference shows up later, when you find that you still have a leak someplace, need to drain fix refill. Suddenlt the less-thanhalf cost of R-134a looks pretty good.

With the freeze switch working, I consistently see the center vent temp cycling at 30-34F now. With the old freeze switch, 22F on 90 days, freeze my fingers. Now I fon't need to "defrost" the evaporator on longer drives.

Doing the lastest service on the car, I replaced all the coolant hoses, so the HCV was out. Apperently didn't get the vacuum hose on there well, so the AC temp was about 70F. What??? So full heater plus full AC capacity on a 95 day worked out to 70 at the vent. Came home, let it cool overnight, off comes the air filter and there's the hose in there loose. Whew! Coulda been worse!

I was initially worried that I might have damaged the expansion valve while wrestling with those little clamps for the heater hoses at the heater core end. 7mm combo wrench in a very tight space to get these two clamps off, no real room for a screwdriver in there. Tedious. That's why regular mechanics are so anxious to work on these cars. Stupid stuff takes an hour instead of a minute. That's also why a lot of 20+ year old cars still have the original heater hoses in them. Ticking time bombs..

I do have a whole set of 17-year-old heater hoses (and the five year old big hoses) ready to go on Ebay. Get 'em now before I list 'em. Should I list the seven year old 40k miles only-driven-on-Sundays timing belt and rollers as a separate listing?

Mike,

Glad you got you cool back. Love happy endings.

Dr. Bob,

I have a slightly used (20K) pole positions you could list as well. Maybe put something in the ad about bald tires being like a racing slick. More rubber to contact the road.......

Dr Mike
Great to hear you have cold A/C!!!!!!!! So a near 50 degree differential is about right!! Much nicer isn't it!! Glad you got it fixed.....If I remember right it cost me about $600 to get mine working right (including vaccum problems)...most of it was the hose-drier-evac-R12...but I don't care...cold A/C is a must!!! Plus its hotter in the valley....I can't remember a sub 100 day in a while!!!!!

I took out the fan, flapper box and replaced the seals on the flapper it self. Cleaned the evaporator and filer with foam cleanerand now I'm getting great airflow. This is the temprature I get at the outlet. Like to know what others are getting.
