That's a pic of the ignition wiring. I tore it all out. Fortuneately, the monkeys did not cut the terminals off the wires. But they did break off the column lock tube at the column, so a new steering column is in my future. 
I'm finding too that any parts the PO reinstalled, he used standard bolts, and forced them in. The outside mirrors, for example, I'm going to have to drill out.
I took off the intake tubes this morning, they are stock! The rubber band connecting the timing belt cover is factory stapled to the flex tube. No sissy venturi tubes for this car!

Runs and drives!
After I drained the ignition box of it's half load of water and sprayed it out with electrical cleaner, she started right up! 
It runs pretty well, revs smoothly, even with no tuning as yet. The 3-speed shifts right into reverse, with basically no delay.
The brake pedal did go to the floor when I backed her out to turn around, is that bad?

If you ever worked inside the door, you may have seen that the steel intrusion bar mounts to brackets that have two holes, although only one is used.
This '80 has an thick aluminum 'H' channel which bolts to all four of those holes!
A steel tube must have been a US mandate. It certainly looks like an afterthought, compared to this aluminum piece.

my 77 has NO bars, the only federalization done was the headlights and side markers, and I put an air pump on to meet emissons here... nothing else
my 78 has no bars, my 79 does have the bars and they are steel
all are Euros.. I'll check my 79 US to see whether it has them or not
as an afterthought... the 77-79 928s are now EXEMPT from having US DOT add-ons.. per USDOT, yes I spoke to them, you can refit your car to how it was originally built, which means you can remove the bars, side markers, cc etc.. as long as you can pass your local inspection

I finally had a chance to do some cleaning and change the oil. The oil filter was marked with the last change date - 1994! Yikes!
It's running pretty good, but the injectors need to be rebuilt, the alternator is non-op, and woops, the oil drain bolt hole is totally stripped. The pan is a little beat up, so I'll probably just replace it.
No rust, besides a few surface blems, and the battery box floor, but that's only surface rust, thankfully.
I only noticed a few days ago that this car was ordered without headlamp washers. There's no plumbing, and the wiring at the tank is factory tar taped. The column switch is not original; anyone have a no-headlight-washer switch, without cruise too, preferably?
More '80 (and earlier) obscura; the fender over-engine crossbar is steel, the PS pump, and all of the cam gears are cast iron! There's an extra brace between the front fender support and the very front of the frame.
This is about the only nice thing in the interior, as yet.

Yeah, my 78 has those supports. I t hink its a good thing. I'm having them stripped and powdercoated.

Yay! I managed to get both seat backs upright! (Both were stuck fully reclined.) The passenger side I managed to help up, but the motor on the driver's side doesn't go. I managed to adjust it by removing the cover (flat head screw), pulling the main gear, then using WD40, a 10mm wrench to turn the axle, and push/pulling the seat back at the same time.
Both of these seats have to be replaced, but it was a cool feeling to have power seats in a 928. In my normal driving position, I have almost an inch of headroom without the sunroof!
I could get used to all these heavy gadjets, especially when it's in 'her' car.
