If there is now an 83 ECU in Ken's car, then I assume the wiring harness was also changed. The 1980 uses a connector to the ECU that is unique for that model year. So if he has a newer style harness and connector he may need the 81-84 ECU. Unless the PO did a wire hack job ....sure hope not.

I was expecting that if the 83 box was put in that it would be the same?

When I first had the 81 ecu to sell I did some research and the part looks like it would be for 80, 81, and 82. Not 83, but if its in the car, then I could be wrong.

I still have to go finish butchering the '83 carcass sometime this week.

I hope I can trade some of the few good parts for resto items!
...

Brendan,

What number is on your ECU? I have two ~04 spares already now, plus my original '81 ~02 (the '80 is ~01).
...

Richard,

It appears the PO just plugged it in to the original harness, without modification. Any idea how the connector is wired differently? (I'll go through the WSM el-diagram this evening.)

I thought the ~01 might have different programming, to go along with no smog (air) pump for '80.

The box I have is an 01 actually. I'd like to say I should keep it for a spare as you have, but I know if I buy of one these cars again it will be directly converted to some aftermarket system.

Love the no-wiper!

Note to self: don't mix up neg and pos!
The front wheel does look a little odd, but it should have 205's on the fronts, instead of the mixed brand 225's all round.

The ECU just reeks when you open up the can. Oh the humanity!

Curios as to why some of you prefer no sunroof?

For me, no sunroof = more headroom. Especially while wearing a helmet...I have to lean the seat back and still scrunch my head down while wearing a helmet. Very uncomfortable. Weight savings is also an issue for cars that get raced. Personally I would not get a sunroof in any car, never have liked them.

The 928 doesn't really have a sunroof. Its more of a small mail slot. Useless.

It's so nice to sit in the car, and not bump my head on the roof if I sit up straight - and that's with power seats!
...

I compared the electrical diagrams for '80 and '81, and the ECU pin outs are the same. The wire connector at the ECU is identical. The circuit boards are nearly identical.

The distributor is a special for '80, so it must be an emissions thing. Different advance curve, and maybe fuel programming to get around the air pump delete.

It will be interesting when I go for DEQ...

Ken, check the part numbers for the 80 vs 81 fuel injection brains. 928 Intl web site lists the 80 as a seperate number than the 81-84 brains. (928 618 106 01 vs. 928 618 106 04) I believe there is a difference in the connection from wiring harness to brain, with the 80 being longer.

Yes, the '80 has a different part number, revision 01 versus 04. My '81 came with revision 02, but runs fine on 04.

Note the only visible difference to the 04 is the fuel consumption output.

Again the only difference I can see between '80 and '81-84 must be programming for emissions. In Oregon, 1975-1980 have only to pass the 'Basic Emissions Test', whereas 1981 to 1995 have to go for the 'Enhanced Test', on the rollers.

Tried to start her, tonight. No dice. Check out the fancy PO wiring job.

I'm going to have to trace all the wires, I guess...
