Yeah I figured he was just playing. But you never can tell. It was a C6 with the new style headlights.

It's similar to some situations when people try to race you, when you are not even attempting to race. But if you have a loud exhaust, and accelerate with a little gusto, some people think you are racing them. I have had a ricer or two take off on me, thinking I was trying to race them, when I wasn't. So they may consider it a 928 "kill" story, and talk about how they walked away from me, when in reality, I never even really hit the throttle...

Not to hijack the thread, but Willow Springs was a lot of fun. As I mentioned in another post, the car's going back into the shop for some maintenance and to chase down a lingering problem.

The car hasn't had any meaningful suspension work, so it was a little sloppier in the turns than I would like, although there was probably a lot of inexperience contributing.

The only real issue I had was that I blew a lot of oil out of the breather lines--like somewhere around 1.5 qts. the first half-hour run. Underneath the car was literally dripping, and I even got some wheel slip towards the end. I was hesitant to bring this up, since I'm not sure how much (maybe all) of my other problems are contributors. I definitely need a catch can of some kind, I think, and other issues to deal with oil management if I'm going to do more tracking of the car. I haven't heard of other people having such severe expereinces, so I assume I am in the extreme minority for some reason TBD.

The car was definitely faster in the straights than most other cars in the novice class. In the whole population, there were a lot of Mustangs, Corvettes, several NSXs, and quite a few 911s. One other track prepared 928, black with #309 on the side. There were a few Minis, too, which seemed to do pretty well. A few open wheel cars, a 356... A few ricer cars, too, Evos maybe?, and a Suburu or two which seemed to do pretty well. One Cobra had the Kenne Bell SC and was running 17 lbs of boost(!) and runs 22lbs when he drag races. Said he did more than 500RWHP at 17, and ran the 1/4 in the 11s. He ended up in the weeds before the end of the day, which is a bummer because he had a SWEET pearlized factory paint job. I don't think he did any body damage, but going off-road at speed can't be good.

I noticed that almost everyone with an SC has their intakes in the engine compartment, which Bell says is a huge no-no, although it is aesthetically more pleasing.

Lots of people in the novice class went off the track (or spun on the track)--probably 5 or 6 over the course of the day. I drove spirited, but never on the ragged edge, since I was a) worried about breaking something, b) worried about how I would then get home, and c) how much it would cost to fix if I did.

I did almost lose it once coming out of turn 9 which is declining radius--I was drifting closer to the ouside edge than I wanted and corrected (near panicked) with the steering wheel (and must've also lightened up on the gas), which caused a groan/wail/squeal from my rear left wheel as it started to lose adhesion. I had visions of Jim Bailey's admonishment about spinning down the straightaway and now know where he was coming from.

Even though it was great fun, I was constantly worried about the consequences of making an error, since fixing these cars is sooooooo expensive. Maybe I'm too much of a sissy, or need to be on firmer financial footing where I wouldn't blanch at taking a several thousand $ hit for a momentary mistake. The 928 guy said he spends ~$20k/year to do 10 or so events.

If I was going to do much of this, it would make a lot of sense to have a track car. If I had an extra US$20k, I would take a look at the racer for sale that was just posted. It'd be a long trailer ride up and back to Canada, though.

As I was towing my '78 home from Philadelphia last summer, I passed a number of roadsigns like they were standing still.

Default '04 Vette kill

While I was on vacation, and on my way back to Centralia from north Idaho, I had the opportunity to test the car against the new vette. I was driving at a brisk 85mph when a shiney new vette pulls up next to the shark. Hmmmn Heidi is hungry and this guy is looking and acting like lunch. He does a couple of throttle blips, to get his point across to me that the show was about to start. I pull back on the Jager tip shifter engaging third, the revs come up and settle, and I look across at the chebby owner and smile, nod and give a little wave, just before I hit the throttle. See ya... Heidi launches with a very satisfactory roar from the Ott equiped exhaust and accelerates to 140 in a blink. Bye Bye Mr. Chebby better luck next time.

This was last Sept. I'll have more this coming May/June. I'm quite sure that when I drive from the PacNW to SITM that I will have the opportunity to feed Heidi a very balanced diet.

Hmmm. I'll have to get into my long term memory banks to remember any sort of kill in the 89.

Ah, but if Kaz is listening, I'm sure he'll remember the "nicely keeping up with" I did on a Z3 Mcoupe with my no deceased 81 auto.

My fault Randy. I asked Brian how his car did at the track. Gotta give the man props for the CGT story though. The only way it could have been better is if the CGT crashed into the back of him.

Ah yes, Brendon and I were late trying to catch Dan of Socal928 on a fun run. I was in my blue 88, Brandon in his 81. We were passing a lot of traffic trying to make up time and this M3 is suddenly "keeping up" with me. So I drop the hammer and am pulling on him when I happen to look in the rearview mirror and see Brendon on my bumper pulling by this guy as well. From there I forgot all about the M3 and tried to figure out just how B was managing this feat. He said it wasn't easy but if you kept the pedal firmly on the floor it was manageable. I was thoroughly impressed.

I think I posted this story last fall. I was coming back from Newport Beach fairly late and pretty much from there to LA had it pegged around 95mph with the occasional burst to 100mph+ traffic permitting. I wasn't looking to race, just eating up miles. All the way up there'd be the occasional car that would think I was playing around, they'd hang a few miles and then just drop back. I get past LAX into that bottleneck of freeway before you meet the 10 and see a new Subie STI pulling on from the Washington Blvd exit. I had kind of slowed to maybe 75mph or so at this point just because it's not the best pavement through that section. This guy, a kid really and his two friends sees me and makes a beeline over the fastlane where I was cruising. He gets in my blindspot to look me over and because I saw him coming I was already in third waiting. STI's mess with me a lot more when Im in the Audi S4 so I'm fairly familiar with what he'll be able to do when he gasses it. So, he starts to go and I drop the hammer....he's stays where he is for a few seconds and then starts dropping back.

I have him cleared by a few car lengths and start making my way over for the 10 East freeway ramp. A nice right hander with a dip that will throw the car a half lane over if you're not ready and are going fast. If there is anything you can count on it's the over confidence of a guy in a sporty all wheel drive car. (ahem) excluding myself of course. On the straight leading up to the ramp, I'm at around 80mph or so. It is clear in front of me and the Subie is glued to my rear figuring he's going to go around me when it briefly opens to two lanes in the middle of the ramp. It closes back to one lane before the merge(with traffic from the 405 south) at the exiting end, so you have to be sure you can make a pass if you're going to try it. So I ramp it up on the approach because I know I can take this ramp at close to 100mph and still shut down if things are ugly on the other side. He tries to go with me, and is more or less within a few car lengths as we enter the turn. He swings wide like he's on the track going for the "apex" of this ramp. What you really want is to hug the inside wall and prepare for the dip that will throw the car towards the outside wall. Anyway, I nailed it perfectly and was some 15 or so lengths away from him and slowing when he pulled up beside me at what he thought was a respectful pace. They looked sheepish. I put the window down, and held my hand out to indicate "you first" for another run. They chuckled and declined.

Lastly, my big GOT KILLED story. Coming back from Eurofest (I think it's called) in Santa Barbara I was running with two of my Audi friends whilst in my then new to me white 928 S4. One is a green A6 with K04 turbos that runs low 12's and the other is a red S4 with Stage 4 everything as well. We were cruising along when we got some open highway to run a little. I was slightly behind the red car when I saw his arm move for the shift to whatever gear he was going for. I thought I was ready in third and dropped the hammer. The bumper of the Audi S4 squats hard....but...I was still there...and then the turbos spooled and he was gone. I had never been left so hard in my life. It was ugly. My cell phone rings and it's Walter, the driver. All I could say was, "for a second, I really thought my old car was going to stay with you." To give you an idea of how hard his car can now pull, he did a repeat performance with a GT2 Porsche a few months ago leaving Euro Sunday in Calabasas. Both driver and passenger in the GT2 looked stunned. As was I. I'm quite certain one of the 8+lbs boosted 928's could do well against this kind of threat.

Two year old S2000, rolling start off a roundabout, started to catch him up and as he realised he floored it (quite a lot of exhaust from that high revving engine). Slowly reeled him in up to about 110, when I pulled level, as we were approaching another roundabout I eased off to let him go (my brake discs needed replacing). And that was before my MAF was replaced and the top end rebuild.
