Default Broken Hood cable!!!!!!!!!

Today has gone just great....went for a drive to see how much my new two piece bra flaps around, notice the "antilock" warning is on. 1/2 through my drive it goes away (good thing, checked the fuse its fine). Finish my drive and reach down to pop the hood. Feels unusally stiff....(being a genius) I keep pulling then....it gives and the hood does not open. Now the lever just moves around with little tension at all. WONDERFUL

So I check the shop manuals, praying that the cable attachment at the lever is stripped....check the car....ya right. I take apart the lever assembly so that the lever (with cable still attached) is removed from the pivot. Hold the cable housing with vice grips and pull on the lever (very hard)...doesn't move at all...think the vice grips might be pinching the cable so I try it by hand....still can't get the cable to move!!!! I can slide the cable housing, but not the cable? After a long period of cussing and throwing things I sit down to write this, & figure out how much of a POA it is going to be to take off the bumper to get to the hood release!!!

Anyone done this before, is there an easier way? Please help!!!

This is probably in the catagorey "wishful thinking", but is there a back up cable accessible from the front hanging down above the radiator grille? Or can you reach up through the grille bars and use a long screwdriver to actuate the latch from below? Sometimes people install such back up attachments in case the main cable breaks. I had one on my 914/6.

Thinking of how hard it is to break into a 928, maybe it really is wishful thinking, but there must be a way, with just a little calm thought beforehand.

I think you can access the cable, or the latch, from under the front grille.
I had the same thing happen, and my shop was able to pop the latch
pretty quickly.

After a little more research I found out that I can reach inside through the grill (after I got the bra "off"), but there is a plastic shroud directly below the lock mechanicism. I checked on my friends 87, and his shroud is "cracked" so you can access the lock. I don't like the idea of cutting the shroud to get at the lock, but the alternative is to take off the airdam and most of the bumper to reach the same point? I will try the "have someone push down on the hood" while trying to pull the cable with pliers, but I still think the set screw slipped or the cable broke?

PROBLEM FIXED!

It turns out a gunked up cable + the extra tension of the new bra was enough to cause the cable housing to "flex" out of the lever cup (P# 928-511-173-02). After making an improvised cable puller with a pair of vice grips the hood opened. The bummer is I cracked the lever cup when I took it out, but its cheap ($4.50) so I'll have a new one in a few days. It might be tough getting the cable back into the cup, I'll find out in a couple days.

I don't have one, but bras are notorious for damaging the paint unless you keep it meticulously clean under there. Excuse my rudeness, but considering this added problem, other than at the track, is it worth it? Just my .02.

Steve
Now I have two bras+mirror bras....a factory 1 piece in so-so condition (also known as flap-O-Matic above 75mph) and a brand new factory two piece that won't work on my car....I might keep it and try again in warmer weather....or I might just be a bra-less from now on! Decisons-Decisons!

I agree that the bra requires an inordinate amount of extra maintenance. I gave up on it due to the need to remove it and wash twice a week. The thing is you can't just clean the car, you need to also clean the bra before it goes back on. Sounds easy but life's prioirities make a simple investment in time like this difficult for some at times.

The downside of not having the bra for most of the three years of daily use on my GT is that the nose cone (and low on the hood and front fenders) has been sandblasted from road use. Repaint will be required at some time.
