Talking Hood Release Malfunction

I have recently purchased a 1986.5 928S, and it and I have been getting to know one another pretty well as of late. Being as I am, and always have been an inherent "tinkerer" ...I felt this car, with its unknown maintenance history, and typical problems for this model of this era...would be a perfect opportunity for me to learn almost everything there is to learn about it, as I pursue my goal of "Total Restoration" along with some tasteful performance upgrades. I hbave purchased the manuals, and a"manual on CD" (Thanks Jim) ..but have just the other day encountered a problem which is to say the least "very disconcerting"....The Hood Release cable has either broken...or has become disconnected from the Lever in the lower Driver Side footwell. I can't get the hood to open. Any one here had this happen ??? How in the heck, can I get my hood open to either replace the cable, or fix whatever has malfunctioned ??? Any constructive advice at this juncture would certainly be most appreciated. BTW ...I have been reading this forum now for a couple months, since I bought my 928S ...and would like to say that you guys seem to be a very nice and knoledgeable lot... and I should probably join and use this as an excellent reference for my car. As I just got it...and really have no background on the car other than the Title. I am sure that there will be lots of things that will arise tha the consultation of experienced owners will be an invaluable aid in troubleshooting. My 928S is a fully optioned Black/Black carin very good condition. Last four digits of the VIN are 1104, so I assume it has the S4 brakes on it.
Regards ...

Jeff, congrats on your purchase
if the cable has disconnected in the drivers compartment area it's probably broken at the lever that mounts up, this I have seen many times, the lever and it's mount are plastic and can be replaced

You can access the latch from below and just pull the lever where the cable attach's to the mechanism, however, access is pretty difficult, may well have to remove lower spoiler.

Default Thanks for the input ...

Thanks for your responses. Sorryr about the bold text...its an old habit from my days on the 3000GT VR4 boards. Not meant to offend anyone. But... I guess I' crawl under the steering wheel tonight, and see ( I mean hope) that th cable has popped loose from the lever, and I can get a hold of it with a pair of needle nose pliers and pop the hood open. If not ... I may be in for a long afternoon under the car trying to fish the cable at the latch end enough to pull it and release the darn thing ...

You're not going to see anything you can pull on under there (driver footwell). The plastic lever and outer shell have to come off which is a couple bolts and some carpet pulling. Chances are the hook unfolded at the end of the cable. Consider the cable dead. Big 3 will turn you on to a new one.

To get the hood open, lay down under the nose, look up into the recess where the latch lives. Put a light on it, use a long heavy screwdriver to reach up and push the release arm the direction it wants to go if pulled by cable. Hood will pop.

To replace the cable you'll need to pull the front driver side fender panels to see where the cable gets routed. It's about an hour's work.

what do you mean "fender panels" ??? ... I hope your not saying I have to take the fender off to replace the hood release cable. As far as opening the hood from under the car nose, you wouldn't know off-hand which direction to push the latch to release the catch would you ? Sorry to ask so many questions, just being unable to open the hood is a real drag...I don't think I am going to be able to stand it very long without diong something drastic..

And BTW, Sublimate ...thanks for the great links . That was exactly what I needed to rectify this trouble.... I really have to remember that "search" feature ....everyone on these forums keeps harping about.

I'm pretty sure you push it towards the driver's side.
Look here for a recently appearing picture of the latch:
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/174410-more-plating-before-and-after.html
The second picture is the latch upside down and the fourth is installed (and nicely plated by Cris).

Jeff Jackson... maybe you got lucky - perhaps the set screw
holding the clamp at the cable (hood)end came loose.

From under the nose, push the hood lever toward the driver's
side to pop the hood.

BTW, we need pics; and in your signature, MY and color and other
descriptive bits to amaze and wow us.

Thnx. G'luck.

Sure...Sure... I gotta few pics handy. I need to figure out the particulars of this forum (they seem to all be different with regard to allowable picture size for sig pics, and avatars and whatnot)... By the way, I got a really nice running, and excellent interiored vehicle, for (in my view ...dirt cheap) I LOVE this car !!! My previous daily driver was a 95 Mitsu 3000 GT VR4 with 26K miles on it when I got it...and 56K on it when I sold it. ... (I Always wanted a 928, and felt its time to do it now)...This car has 100K on it, but is obviously well built, and has always been a non-smokers car. Thats a MUST for me. It smells great in here, and the leather is fabulous for an 19 year old car. Better than my VR4 in terms of comfort and beauty. It runs great, has a very smooth idle, and delivers decent fuel economy (for my driving style)...One minor caveat is there seems to be a mid range "hole" in torque for some reason. It leaves OK, and once it gets up to cruising speed...the torque is fine. But, if left in "Drive"...anywhere between 20 and 50 MPH seems to be pretty "flat" in terms of *** dyno specs... Oh well, just the satisfied smirk of driving this car is priceless around here. And with my mechanical prowess, it shoouldn't take me long to get the performance capabilities up to my expectations. (I was very spoiled ny the VR4). 12.40s at 112 mph and totally docile on the street. I am gong to get the 928S painted (Factory Black again)...and do wheels and tires over the winter, along with catching up the maintenance requirements, of whch I have no idea what has or hasn't been done prior to my ownership of the car. the only thing I can say for sure is I TRULY LOVE this car....and its all there....and really could be special if I just put the work into it. By next spring, I'm hoping to be well on the way. Sorry for the rant.
