Default 32 valve cam timing tool

(Group Buy#2 1/22-2/22)

By popular request (), I'm going to work on a pointer to allow 32V owners to easily set up their cam timing. Similar to what I've made for my (16V/32V cam gear conversion).

It will be laser cut, stainless steel, with zero, advance, and retard marks to dial in either for stock, or for performance. I'm guesstimating it will be around $20 for one.

It will, as accurately as possible, indicate the center of the camshaft key behind the cam gear at the housing mark. It will be located by the 3 bolt holes in the timing gear hub (spider). The distributor rotor will be removed, and the pointer will be installed in it's place by three bolts.

I am not sure, at this point, how accurate it will be vis-a-vis the cam lobe measurement (as specified in the WSM), given that it depends on the 3 hub bolt holes. It should be fairly close and definately much easier to change for tuning purposes.
...

Would it still be useful, if it were not as precise as the lobe measurement?

Should I just always plan on selling two, since this makes for faster setup?

How many degrees advance or retard should I incorporate?

Is there any features that I should also try to include?
For example:
~A second 'finger' to indicate the same measurement at 180 degrees
~Marks on the center ring to indicate TDC of all cylinders on that bank
~Captive installation bolts

Is there something I'm not thinking of?

I will buy one! Also, how about the little arm that screws into the bottom of the dial indicator and rests on the tappet?

I'll take one for each cam bank. I would think six degrees of adjustment would be plenty, I can't see using more than three.

Ken,
Will this newer version also allow for the 16v set-up with the HTD/32v gear mod? If not, could both be integrated into one tool - for those who like their OBs as much as the 32v's ?

Brendan,

The other cylinders are equally spaced around a circle, so the marks would just have to be 45 degrees apart. This would be on the circle on the front of the gear (like in my avatar).
...

Lagavulin,

The point (as it were) of this pointer is to show the cam position at the front of the cam, without having to remove the cam covers (and use a dial indicator on a cam lobe).

I'm hoping that it will be close enough to the dial indicator method to be useful.

It will at least be repeatable to the wrong spot every time!
...

Jim R.,

There is about one tooth (7.5 degrees) plus, or minus, possible movement in the cam gear slots, so 6 sounds good to me.
...

Garth S,

Yes, it will work for both. With my conversion pointer now, I made it beefy so as to not lose it's adjustment, but in doing so, I don't think it will fit between the gear and the head on 32V cars. (Plus it is takes too much labor to make the current style!)
...

Adam C,

IF it becomes available, I will definately PM you.

I am not at home or else I'd look it up for you. According to the manuals, there is a difference in timing between the two.

im wondering how to set-up my timing now with reground cams.
What are the new specs on the cams? When does the intake/exhaust open and close at 1mm of tappet lift? Knowing those events would help determine whether to advance or retard them with respect to the factory GTS numbers.

Doh! Ok, still sounds cool though.
