Default polishing scratches out of glass?? UPDATE!!

Anyone with experience polishing light scratches out of glass? Cant feel them but can see them when sun hits right. Tried toothpaste by hand,(recommended high speed polisher) left a sticky mess that was hard to clean. Not much showed up on google search either. Would love to get rid of them.

Goto gas station and they'll fix it.

I can't go to gas station without shaking them off me.

I just ordered the kit above. Figure I will try it first. The cars wash always wants to fix any chips in the glass but I didnt see any polishing offers. Besides the labor and messing up the window trim concern me.

I did the Eastwood glass scratch repair kit thing about three years ago, and it worked great. Click the pic for more pics and a few notes (look for the section entitled "Fixing a Windshield Scratch").

Thanks Ed! This is really a timely post! Over the weekend, I put a 2" scratch in the rear window of the 78 (please don't ask, its VERY painful to talk about ) and this afternoon I ordered the polishing kit from Eastwood. Hope I see the same results you did.

EDIT: BTW, I really like your choice of liquid refreshments in the first pic!

Which kit did you guys use? They offer one for light and one for deep . I ordered the light scratch kit because I was worried I might ruin the glass. It says the deep scratch one removes glass.

I just realized I could click the photo and after reading your info figured out which one you used. Same one I ordered.

I ordered both. Figured I try the less abrasive approach first and if that doesn't work, I'll use the more aggressive kit exercising a great deal of caustion. If the less aggresive kit works, I can always send the other back.

They said on the website to do a test: if your fingernail catches in the scratch go with the aggressive kit otherwise the first kit will work fine.

I don't think they had the "deep kit" at the time I did mine. I thought my scratch was pretty deep, though. It was due to a pebble that was embedded in the wiper that created a rather nice arc before I noticed what was happening. As I recall, I probably spent about a half an hour of actual polishing to remove the scratch. It's totally gone; you'd never know there was ever a scratch.

Of course, there are now about a thousand small pits from the sandblasting that the shark gets during normal use, but that's another matter...

Yeah, I've found that time seems to pass a little faster when the proper liquids are consumed. Curiously, I don't think the instructions Eastwood supplied covered this issue. Sometimes, one just has to improvise.

I'll have to give this a try, the glass on my Audi looks like the swirl marks on a dark car covering the whole windshield.

Thanks for this info. A few days a go I watched as a pebble few up from a car in front of me heading straight for my eyes - so now my otherwise pristine windshield has one mark perfectly in my line of sight.

Will the polishing kit not work on the pits?

Well, it probably would work, but I don't relish the thought of the job. It'd probably take all day. It might be worth it, though... maybe that'd make a good winter project.
