I started with one in 1999, and got the early '86 with an auto. Then later I stumble upon the Porschelist (now Rennlist) and I read all the threads about auto vs. 5sp, so I think well maybe I gotta try that out, and of course it has got to be an '86.5. In 2003 I found one and bought it, telling the wife I need two because that way when I'm on vacation I have one to drive and one to work on/upgrade. Then the upgraded one catches on fire , so I'm down to 1 1/2. Jim Bailey calls me up and tells me to "Get back on the Horse, and by the way we have a unique 86.5 that is calling your name". So Oct. 2005 finds me with 2 1/2 and I'm happy again cuz I'm broke again, and I got one to drive and one to work on and plenty on the to do list to keep me broke!

You know fellas... those are "exactly" the kind of responses...I knew this post would garner... . It never ceases to amaze me. This car...the "personal" nature that it require and demands from its owner, and the reward for the effort..is truly unique. I have had a few "nice cars"..never more than 1 of any model though...but, I am seriously considering another 928 (if the right circumstances present themselves)...in other words..."I'm not looking, but I look at all the ads"... you know what I mean.

What model do you have now? We can help to describe the proper model to compliment it.

Mines a rather plain (but beautiful) Black / Black 86.5 automatic... well appointed (aren't they all)...and 114K on the clock. I was lucky, the PO was an "addict" too. and the car is everything I could hope for or ask of an 86.5. I am constantly looking for odds and ends type parts...(=big dollars) for it...but thats only because the hook is set so deeply... I find myself reading the 928 Intl. catalog while in the john..(OK...too much information)...suffice it say, I'm hooked. I'll try to get some suitably sized photos...so I can have an avatar or something ...

Well in that case you need an 86.5 5sp to go with that one!! Cuz you know you just haven't lived a full life till you've owned and driven a 5sp 928.

Yep. 5spd. But S4. You need a new model to compliment the classic original shape. And an 89.

Why don't you buy mine. I'll give you a deal since its build-your-own. Everything but the seats and motor. 17k.

This way each can have a specific "theme". With "one", you want to do everything and sometimes the mods are contradictory, with two or more, the one for commuting won't have the full suspension mods and the wife enjoys driving it, but the one for weekend mountain roads does have all the mods, but it is too rough and loud with the Avenger exhaust for a long commute with my wife.. Also after you spend enough of your blood on bringing one of these up to par, its hard to give it up, the monies generated by selling it may not be worth selling it considering the time, blood and the monies invested. Ed, member of 928 anonymous! Speaking of which, I need to sell the 944 to make room for another 928.....

For me, it started with a fight with my mechanic...and so I decided that I'd rather have redundancy than be subjected to expensive emergencies...and then realized no one 928 has it all...no matter how much you concentrate the modifications and upgrades...so in the chase for the ultimate combination of features, we end up with more 928's

HOWEVER

when I put my hands on a twinsupercharged quadturboed (2 in front and 2 in rear) quad supercooled bored and stroked 5spd LSD factory full leathered widebody convertible true-lambo-doored numbers-matching 928, I MIGHT consider not buying another one

OK Shane...I better have another beer...and "mull that over"...I think, I agree with you. A 5 speed...Hmmm, you know, you might be right ?? No..No...an 89 S4 5 speed...as Brendan mentioned...too much to digest. Where's my beer ?? My 18 year old son, has been reading the forum too, and saw the post from the 16 year old with the S4...needless to say...he thinks another shark is a "great idea"...

Some say it's a sickness...OK, maybe.

If I truly had my way, I would have a fleet of them, one of every kind...which probably exceeds 30 cars!

Many of us have owned other cars, but with the 928, plain and simple, it just feels right.

I would bet that all of us who own more than one, personally work on them and have a deeper appreciation for what they really are. We realize the TRUE value of them and know that for the money, there really aren't many (if any) cars out there that can compare.

We are able to touch the dream at bargain prices!

Ah, perfect. A father/son project. I'll put the suspension and transaxle in this weekend. It will be ready to roll onto a trailer on Monday.

Its a quandry. Its my first 928 that 89. I have all the suspension in front powdercoated. Rebiult TT. Bead blasted bumper ready for new paint. Sub strips have been removed, but I haven't touched the paint yet, which was perfect before I even took the car apart. Perfect dash and pod. Perfect rear quarters, door panels, headliner, etc. 75k on the body and interior, but everything else will be new when its back on the road. Just like the 78, but fresher I guess. The thing is, if I had NOT taken it apart and continued driving it, it would be a tired 150k or more car, all dirty underneath, needing a rebuilt engine, rebuilt trans, new shocks, etc. The dash might have gotten cracked from use in the SoCal sun.

Its a Quandry these cars. Drive them? Use them up? Rebuild them before its too difficult to clean and put back together?

You weren't here for this: You know why its in pieces? The LH died in 2002. October of 2002. Its 2006! And that 89 got put behind the "daily driver" restoration of the 78 that has evolved from a rebuilt 4.5L with no work on the ailing paint, to a full on restoration of the body with new paint from the metal up, new interior, and a 5.0L engine FROM THE 89! Because hey, I'll just auild a supercharged stroker for the 89, from what I learned building the other engines

When does it stop? I mean, I was in my 85 Euro last night, and a Vanquish pulled up next to me and took off. I stayed with him just fine. And trust me, I listened to his exhaust note all the way to a buck 25. He was trying. So I'm supposed to buy a new car, chuck all these "old" ones. And then what? I have a 1500 dollar a month lease payment for a car that can just barely stay ahead of a 6k auto 928 made in 1985?

This post speaks to this thread because you need more then one 928 like you need more then on tool. You need to build different things.

I'll just make sure all my 928s are above 500rwhp.

  1. 1979 928 - track car
  2. 1981 928 - I'm in so deep I cannot afford to sell it
  3. 1987 944S - purchased in 1996, my first Porsche. I have no reason to sell it.
  4. I hope to buy an S4 to supercharge in the next few years. Why? Because I want to. You can never have too many cars.
