is it possible that the black GTS suffered from nothing more than what other non supercharged GTS engines have been troubled by? a number of these engines required rebuilding under warranty with factory fitted sleeves.

it seems re-assuring for those contemplating boost that the pistons didnt melt or disintegrate.

so what if there arent many GTS engines? there are plenty of S4 blocks and you could put the crank in one of those in a worst case scenario - or simply stroke it!

Dr Nick,

I agree complete with the ability to make a GTS engine or more likely going up to 6.4L.
Oddly enough trying to find a replacement windshield is going to be a more daunting proposition then a new engine for the GTS.

On that note (long story short previous owner smashed a bug on the inside of the window and it cracked prior to shipping).
Thanks to a Mark Anderson lead I may have found a new windshield to replace it with. What kind OEM or factory I do not know. If the window works I will post his EBAY name, because I know others out there have been looking for a replacement for some time.

Yes, especially if you consider that the owner put the CS back on the new engine. He must have felt it was safe. It's possible that they both suffered from that and not too unlikely considering that one person got several new engines from the factory. Unfortunately this dosen't make the GTS any better for SCing, but maybe not worse.

Besides highly efficient intercooling we will employ an oil control measure that will hopefull help with oil getting past the pistons (probably not as good as a re-build with through holes drilled for oil ring). It will not help much with oil consumption in general either, just help keep oil out of the cylinder when under boost. BTW just boosting the engine will help keep oil from getting past the pistons, while under boost.
There will also be an addition of fuel management electronics, nothing too complicated though.

drnick,
The 86 is the orange car IIRC. It will be mean with the 5.4. I don't know too much about the 928 Developments part other than it sure is pretty.

Andy,

Quick Carl has gages we may need for the build should I go ahead and get one?
With 2 or 3 readouts?

Chris,
If you really want to get one then go ahead, but I have a mount that puts a boost gauge and and A/F ratio meter in the pod.
The pod is all the way up in this picture so the gauge is higher than it would normally be. It will be black and is part of my systems now. There is no obstruction of view of any gauge or warning light.

Sounds like fun to me. I'll be pretty setteled in by Nov. I have a friend here that has an S4 (SUPERMODEL) too.

big bird is the current name. it's a 5.0 liter block with devek stroker crank and 944 s2 pistons for a 6.0 liter displacement. forged rods, head studs rather than bolts, slightly thicker head gasket to make around 9.5:1 compression. presently with stock heads/cams but i just received a set of custom cams from 928 developments with bigger lift and slightly longer duration which will go in this winter.
we use a vortech v-1 s trim to make about 7 lbs of boost through a spearco air to air intercooler. electromotive tec3r engine management system presently tuned pretty conservatively to make about 470 to 500 rwhp and 450 ftlbs.
stock exhaust manifold going into twin 3" exhaust with twin flowmaster mufflers. headers will also be added this winter.
in its present form, the car has been very driveable and has suffered no issues on the track. it's been an ongoing project having added the intercooler and changing the boost and ignition systems since may so we are still in the stages of getting it sorted out. prior to doing those things i ran it for 10 track days at 5 lbs of boost with no intercooler and a tec2 ignition control with no issues whatsoever.
prior to my ownership the car did blow a head gasket secondary to a lean condition in one cylinder which resulted in damage to the block. the thought at that time was that it was related to fuel delivery as testing with egt sensors showed i believe number six to be running very lean. the engine was rebuilt at that point with a new block and pistons, head studs and the thicker head gasket. fuel system was changed to incorporate a bigger fuel pump and larger injectors and some change to the fuel lines.
as far as i know that was the only major problem the car ever had since being built.
once we get things sorted and incorporate the cams and headers, we hope to get near the 600 rwhp mark.

I saw a Polar Blue GTS in KC a couple of days ago. Never see them around here. Man that car looked beautiful. Pulled up in my old 80 and gave the owner the knowing smile. Congrats.

Chris,

I'm glad you love the car! Don't forget to mention that Todd is actually known as Low Miler on this site. It'll help my credibility in the future......................especially with some in particular!
