Where does it say it was a DEMO car? If you read the ebay ad, there is a rough rundown of where the car has been, and it is pretty consistent with the carfax - no? If it was stored in NJ, maybe the odo reading was misinterpreted to 23k miles instead of 25k miles. I agree with Low Miler that it might be an awesome deal - we don't know. But we also don't know, if it is a lemon. So don't bash too hard, unless you have actually seen it.

Exactly. I think it warrants a checking out. It could really be a good deal! Anyone in that area that could check it out?

Absolutely it does no question about it. I was just pointing out that it seems to have been first sold with 16K miles on it; that HAD to have been with dealer plates on it, or none. lo miler, I wasn't trying to bag on you or what you shared; I was just pointing out this was not necessarily driven by a loving, careful owner since new. Very likely it was never properly broken in. Very likely those 16K miles were by folks (probably many) who only cared enough to try not to f up anything major and get fired.

I was simply trying to be objective and helpful based on the facts presented. Please don't take it personally, I'm not trying to tear anyone or anything down. Sorry if it came off that way.

~$40K may have been what the current owner paid in '91 - or his best guess as to the orriginal sticker - of little consequence either way.
As to the carfax record of Title, it is complete since '91: Since it is silent on the first 4 years, is that an infallable assurance that it was a 'demo'/Dealer's car for that period? - or are there other conditions that would allow for a title issued that carfax did not pick up? (out-of-state, out-of-country).
In any event, the current owner seems to have got along fine for 13 years - would be worth a look IMHO.

low miler, please don't apologize or take the questioning personally. It is important to EVALUATE the possible negatives and positives. Certainly it was worth bringing this car up, and it is worth the back and forth commentary. The fact that you were only burned once means yoiu probably did a lot of due diligence and avoided some turkeys.

I'm highly interested in this car. Is there anyone near that who could do me a huge favor and take a look at it for me? Post here if you can, and then PM or email me so we can work out the details.

Thanks low miler, I know you were trying to do a favor. Everyone here has gotten a bit paranoid, but there will be the endless complaints about price gouging when the car ends up at Wilhoits for an exhorbitant price.

My car was purchased without a PPI or any inspection at all, purely on gut feeling because it looked like a bargain, and it looked like the seller didnt really know what he had. It came from an estate and had been in a museum in Omaha. Some local guy bought several cars from the estate and sold the ones he didn't like. I bought the car from this middle man and it was clear he had no clue. The car was on ebay and was described wrong to the point he said that S4 meant it was a "rare all wheel drive" car.

But I bought it because of the price, and when I got to Omaha to pick it up I found all the service receipts in a folder, including a $2500 30k service performed only weeks before the museum owner died. This included TB, Water Pump, pretty much everything was done to the car.

I bought the car 2 years ago for 15k. I thought it a bargain then, and 4000 miles later I am even more pleased. There is nothing on the car that doesn't work perfectly.

Now, I tell this story to say that not everyone selling a 928 is out to rip someone off. There are a LOT of genuinely uninformed people that run across these cars and because the prices are so low they don't do a lot of research when they put them up for sale.

It will be interesting to see where this car ends up, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it for sale again soon by a dealer, for a lot more $$$.

I counted 16 928s on autotrader for $10k or less. Some with more mileage, but then there's the pesky POSSIBLE ODOMETER ROLLBACK note. Maybe a reading discrepancy. If so, the owner should be made aware that carfax is reporting the car as such, and have it resolved. Just like credit score. Or, then again,,,,,it could be a real odometer rollback.

I've been actively shopping for two years in this market. Driven, and flown around to see about 20 cars over that time. This strikes me as an average car, with a slightly below average price. So the AC isn't working, it's an indication of comparative neglect, i.e. well, that stopped working so what else stopped working? I respectfully disagree that this is some hot bargain, that should be bought sight unseen, with no photos, limited description, no AC, questions about the mieage, and a story about sold to my niece's cousin twice removed, and only driven on sunday in the summer.

If you want an '87-88, auto, guards red, with either tan or gray interior, keep an eye on this, but keep shopping too, there's a bizzillion of them to choose from. I know, I've seen half the fleet in the last year or so.

Hello Gang,
Thought I would take the opportunity to mention that my well-sorted 1989 S4 a/t is For Sale...I am looking for offers on the low end of ~$13k. I do want it to go to a good home...which means someone here. If you're interested in details...please drop me a line. I can send photos and a full listing if you provide me with your email address. I need to get my act together and post a classified ad on Rennlist and post it to the group...my ambivalence about selling it is evident, no?
Best,
Tim

ps.
Ask Styln928 about his recent "bargain" S4...while the car Low Miler has shared with us may be solid...it may need some work. I would expect that at this price but what else is new. The car is worth a look for sure...

Agreed looks like an excellent deal
Agreed looks suspicious but may not be, depends on a personal inspection.
If I were looking for a car I would go look.

Speculation is simply that . The car may well have been a PCNA factory executive car lovingly driven and serviced at the Reno corporate office then sold to the dealer. May have been a dealer demo that got smacked into a bridge and damaged so badly it should have been totaled but the dealer body shop and parts department decided they could save it and make money, I know of a Ford station wagon that this happened to it was sold as a DEMO with some paint work . Motor vehicle departments , dealers , private sellers do make a lot of errors on odometer readings and even Vin # . Personally , I see little difference between 30,000 miles or 50,000 miles and the condition of the car is what matters but to those with little knowledge or ability to assess condition or "collectors " low miles probably does . There is no 928 Market and because of that this COULD be a good deal . Unfortunately, from my vantage point it seems S-4 values are going lower still depreciating with time and more miles. Good news is how much lower can they go ! You can buy so much car for $10,000 . Compare that to a new BoxsterS at nearly $60,000 which will drop $10,000 or more in the first year !

Garth, there is no way to be absolutely sure unless one of us manages to bump into H.G. Wells and borrow his time machine. So far though, it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck....
