928 in-car video from Thunderhill & Ferrari F1 footage from Laguna
I went out to the 6speedonline track day at Thunderhill last Monday to have a little fun at the track. Here are some video clips I captured. First one has a fellow 928 owner in the passenger seat. Second one is me out on a solo lap, laptime was a 2:10.5 but my excuses are (every driver worth his salt has excuses at the ready) that it was bloody hot, my power steering was going out, I had a mismatched set of tires, the sun was in my eye, the alignment of the moon was reducing my downforce, etc.
Here I am trying to sicken a passenger (26 MB)
It felt fast but the stopwatch says otherwise (26 MB)
And for something completely different, here are a few videos of the Ferrari F2002 trying to break the lap record at the Monterey Historics @ Laguna Seca last weekend. The test driver Andrea Bertolini did some hot laps on Fri, Sat & Sun, culiminating in a 6 lap run on Sun. to try and better Helio Castro-Neves champcar laptime of 1:07.7. He got down to 1:09.1 but most of the fun was in watching him try. There is no sound like a modern F1 V-10 revving to nearly 19,000 rpm.
There he goes! (3 MB)
There he goes again! (3 MB)
Lapping done, it's burnout time! (2 MB)
Oh yeah, this is what it sounds like when 20 of the 39 Ferrari 250 GTO's in existence go by at Turn 4:
The world's most expensive & best sounding parade (9 MB)
Hope you enjoy the show.

F1 Clienti wreck happened in Turn 6 on Saturday. I was at Turn 4 and had no idea the incident was that serious until seeing the pics on the web on Monday.
For those who don't know about this, a 1999 Ferrari F1 car, driven by its owner, crashed hard during one of the sessions at the Monterey Historics, breaking the car into two pieces. MIRACULOUSLY, the driver was uninjured.
Here's that F1 Clienti car shortly before the wreck (3 MB)
Car after:
Car mods are:
Devek L2 Headers & 3.5" single exhaust w/ two Borla XR-1s
Hyperco springs 800/550 lb f/r w/ GT Cup spec Bilsteins
Kinesis K58's w/ Michelin Pilot Sport Cups
Devek adjustable front antiroll bar
Devek strut brace
LSD installed
Big Red 993TT calipers/rotors front & rear
Recaro SPG & Pole Position seats
Moderately gutted, no A/C or radio/speakers
Devek rollbar
Devek racing Accusump kit
Devek radiator
Custom aluminum front splitter
Custom fabbed swaybar mounts

There is a lot of discussion about the car. Was it modded for a taller driver and the tub extended? Or was it failure typical of that year's car? At Silverstone in 1999, Schumacher's car appeared to fail in a similar way after he hit the tire barrier, resulting in his broken leg.

Dennis,
Thanks for the specs. How much does the car weigh? Do you have any pictures of it in its current state? All of the pictures I have seen are older. Nice driving, BTW. I'd like to hear your car from the outside with that exhaust setup. I presume you don't have an x-pipe? Sorry for all of the questions.

dennis,
send me the last video of your car at t-hill on cd if you can. i only have dial up, so ill need the cd.
we should get your car in the 2:05s. wonder how the tires you were using stack up to Hoosiers or Toyo RA1s? after seeing your sears video, I know you can do this! Heck, ive got the ole '79 with a set of hoosiers to a 2:10 a few years ago, so I know you could smoke that car!
Lets get out to the track together before the end of the year!! Let me know if there is a trackquest event.

Tim - It was nice not to be the only 928 out there! You're first in line for the passenger seat at the next track day.
Dave - Yep, that's tire rub due to 315's on 11's back there. We've put on as much spacer as we can and now it's time to bring out the sledgehammer to make more room at the inner fenderwell.
Mark (Red) - Car weighs ~3250lb full of fuel. Maybe a little less due to lighter wheels and battery now. Recent picture:
Re: external sound, I only have this old video from outside the car: Check around :48 sec mark (7MB)
Mark (Kibort) - yeah yeah, didn't you see my list of excuses? I know there's a 2:05 in there too but the driver has to get some sack. I was running on a weird combo platter of Michelins in the rear and Hoosiers on the front, all on 11" wheels. You gotta step up to 11's on the front! Tracquest is going to be at Thunderhill on August 29 & 30 (Sun & Mon) and if you're willing to go out there for a day to instruct, I'll sign up as a student. I think Todd still has room. Oh my! I love it. Thanks. I know what my 928 exhaust setup will be...
Just curious, is this a street car? Couldn't you easily cut 200+ pounds (but that would require removing A/C, heat, carpet, sound deadening, door panels, stereo, and other stuff) to bring down the lap times?

Yep, it's still a street car and yes more weight could be pulled out of it. It's half-gutted, so it doesn't have AC, radio or some interior panels but it still has power windows and sunroof, cruise, carpets. I've forgotten what Kibort's car weighs, but I think it's around 2850 and he still drives it on the street. When I go wheel to wheel racing, the car will be fully gutted and caged but for now it's plenty fast and fun for DE days. I'm still working on modding the driver.

Hey, you dont need excuses, you just need to be pushed!! i think its amost time to take that last 200lbs out of the car and start racing in PRC or SCCA . actually, in the scca ITE group, you could have some great competition.
my car is about 2700lbs empty and 2830 full of gas. I had to run close to 3250 in R5 POC class with their point system and the car was about 1.5 seconds slower.
Now, tell me, exactly, how do those 11"rims fit up front. Im using 9.5s and wanted to go to a 10"up front to fit the 305x18s up front. i worried about internal rubbing, but on the outside, im as close as you can be without any rubbing, except for U turns. my rear 315x17s fit no problem with pounded out fenders , and ive got it not to rub on my 79 withonly a finess roll with a baseball bat. i can even fit 335s on my 11"rims, but funny enough, they become 305s as far as width when stuffed on the smaller than spec 11"rim.
(13.5" wide as they come off a rim, and 12.5 when mounted to a 11"rim)
anyway, Lets talk about t-hill on the 28th. actually, I think thats the SCCA ITE race weekend at sears.
