A metal bell like you'd expect to see on Swiss dairy cows but a bit longer and narrower. It is used as a percussion instrument by hitting it with a drumstick. Often used by marching bands and metal rock bands. Extra popular in the mid-70's.

John, you are referencing "I can't wait" right?

I recall (god, am I dating myself now..) hearing an interview with them.

The said the "bell" effect was actually a piece of metal fence post. Can't remember what they were hitting it with. Also can't think for the life of me why I remembered that.

Edit Errata: Duh-o. That was "Nu Shooz"(sp?) that I was thinking of. Maybe the 80's were harder on me than I thought...

Play some "Hey Ladies" by the Bestie Boys and turn it up with some bass. You'll get some cowbell action.

Nu Shooz? Can't get my LP to play in the car! Haven't thought of them in a long while. (Baby.)

I'll bet I can find that Beastie Boys song. I like 'em and my son has a few CDs.

Not for everybody...

NWA- "Dopeman," from the 'Straight Outta Compton' disc. 90% chance it's sampled, but methinks it's a cowbell.

Also, IIRC, there are a few throughout the 17:05 of Iron Butterfly's "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" (bayy-bee) title track.
