I have a 1980 928S and would like to replace the front and rear speakers. My car does not have the component speakers, they are the ones behind the perforated leather trim and I want to avoid cutting the door trim or metal of the door.
I haven’t taken the door or rear trims off yet, however I’ve read as standard they are 6“x9” 5W Blaupunkt single cone drivers and in the doors there is only around 4cm of space between the back of the door card and the door frame.
Is there a single cone direct replacement available or a 2-way design option?
I confess I don't have a good sense about the rear speakers in an '80. The 5W speaker in my picture were used front and rear in '78 and '79 (928 645 401 00), but at least in PET they went to a 25W rear speaker in 1980 (928 645 403 00). I don't know what the dimensions of those speakers are. I'm headed to 928 Intl today, will see if I can find dimensions there.
These 6x4" are only 35mm in mounting depth.
But the front surrounding mount may need a distanceplate in order to clear for more cone-throw. You would have 5mm to go on which would be a good thickness for a frontplate. And could also be made to fit a wider profile for the mountscrews if necessary. Anyway, they had a very similar profile as the original which is uncommon. I have seen several that had the right depth but the magnet were too large instead.

How are you liking the car so far, Sam? If you need any help with anything or just want to discuss these early cars I enjoy doing so. You are welcome to send me a PM. I own a restored 1981 S.

Many thanks, I’ll take you up on that for sure! All going well so far and loving the car, I’ve just updated my Weird Science post. 😀
And an add on for the early cars that I found on an earlier thread:
"One of the first steps is to remove the seatbacks. Not sure about S4, but on earlier cars the allen head bolts at the hinge point at fenders are tough to get at. Trick is to over-rotate the seatback, ie, past it's locked-down position. In other words, with seatbacks in the cargo-carrying, down, position, lift the lock catch as if you were raising the seatback, then instead, gently push seat back down a bit further. That gives easy access to the allen heads so you can remove them and the seatback and start the project."
I remember doing the shallow front speakers in my 78. At the time, there was a speaker solution, which allowed for direct replacement without cutting the door panels etc. Hans came up with them. Here's the old thread, but the pics no longer work: Installed Hans OB door speakers - Rennlist - Porsche Discussion Forums. I recall those speakers became nla. Anyway, in my search for the old thread, I found these which may be helpful (apologies if any are dup posts from what you already have):
