928 RACING 2023 FINALLY Going to Laguna Seca this Saturday 7-29
Yes, it's been a while, but the 928 will finally hit the track in an SCCA race this weekend at Laguna seca. qualifying is at around 10am and race around 2pm. (ill get the exact times) i got my new'ish yokohama tires on the car and i think its ready to go. had to do all the not fun little things to get it ready. helmet expired, belt expired, brakes gone.... so, we are good now.
btw... if anyone is thinking of taking their cars to the track, i have a constant flow of almost new race rubber from the local pro GT3 cup car team. they have a team of 4 992 cup cars that use front tires exactly what we use on the rears and fronts (if you have space up front on a race car) blasically this new size that yokohama makes now, is like a 315x35x18" tire from hoosier. (same dimensions, 12.25" wide, 18" diameter) the nice thing is that not only are they more sticky than the hoosiers (A6 or A7) they wear better due to the stiff sidewall And they last longer . (its called their A60 compound, which is like a hoosier A6. so, let me know if you are interested. i can get you as many as you want for about $100 each and they only have 2 heat cycles..... they are amazing.
That is ALOT of tire.....I remember getting the Pirelli's from GT3 cups..... I used the 275/645-18's all around and sold the 305 or 315 rears to the corvette guys. It was the "hard" compound....took a bit to get heat but once warm performed great!
My new track toy.....Mazdaspeed turbo miata is a bit cheaper on tires.....under $200 each brand new!
i used those rears too from a couple of cup cars... they fit, but were way too tall.. even messed up the gearing enough to notice. those 305 size tires were 680s which were about 27" tall !! however the new gen sizes allow us to use the 992 fronts ,which are the 300x650x18.. which are perfect for us. miss you out there in that white ghost!

Casper still lives at Thunderhill....even has a 5.0L euro motor.....has some tuning issues but runs. I know the 275/645 Pirelli on 18x10x65mm required fender rolling to clear in front. The 300's also sound like a great tire.... The pirelli's I sold were either 305/680 or 315/705 or something....very very tall tires....the classic slick size of 320/650-18 all around on 12" rims would be great on a heavier more powerful 928....I think that it was Fan & Anderson used to run

Yep.... but the nice thing about the 300x650x18r tire from yoko.... (new this year for the GT3 992 Cup cars) is that they are the width of near a 315, where those 305s from pirelli and even Michelin were pretty narrow, more like hoosier in a 295 size.
Mark, how's that super-stroker from Green Bay running?
How many years do you have on it now?
UNREAL! i was a little scared, as i thought its longevity was that i ran it every week to get groceries and put it through its paces . NOW, after sitting for months at a time, i was a little worried. NOPE< it ran like champ and i dont think i was ever so hard on it. this race i got the green mist back and wanted to pick off a few big buck cars with some good drivers. finally got back into the 1:37s (all time best in the 1:36 in 2010) , and that was with a few not-engine related problems. power steering was failing out of turn 10, high g turn sweeper , bad wheel bearing, and some nasty pad knock back. so much fun! man that car is amazing!!!
I'd wish you good luck, but I know it's all about skill.
Have a great time, buddy!
Thanks.... that old dog did really well . i cant remember a time where i beat on it as hard . And with some great tires that car couldnt do any wrong. some of your buddies were here . Dan Aspeci , in a beautiful 991-2 was tearing it up in the low 1:30s. nice guy we had a few laughs in the pits after qual and race

Glad to hear you had so much fun!
Which wheel bearing is going bad, and what were the clues?
