Default Estate Sale '79 928

Hi all,

I saw this listing last week for an estate sale with 6 vehicles and had to dig deeper. 5 of them were outside and mostly boring (except for the rusty 240Z) but the one kept in the garage - that one caught my eye:

Got up there on Saturday and saw the car- its all there and complete albeit with some issues

So I went back the next day with my Dad and I bought it!

It helps that I have all the parts from another '79 that I scrapped earlier this year -- engine, transmission, everything

So I got it home and started to try and figure things out.

With a booster pack on the battery all hell broke loose-- the speedo went to 60 mph, relays started buzzing etc.

Found this wiring nightmare:

apparently, the 14 pin connectors have failed and the guy just soldered and taped everything together.
with these wires all not contacting any grounds, the car doesn't have all hell breaking loose when I connect a battery - so that's good.

Anyway, I'll start to address the electrical issues that appear to have taken this car off the road after the new 14 pin connector arrives. Engine rotates as is, timing belt appears intact. so that's all good

I did a little wash and polish and cleaned things up too:

before polish:

after:

Got the interior cleaned up as well. Again, it's all there, just needs some TLC. excited to get it back on the road!

as it sits today:

Wish me luck!

Hopefully the start up attempt didn't pump crud from old gas throughout the fuel system. These CIS cars hate crud and old gas. Drain the fuel, flush the take. Flush components. Be systematic and thorough.

Good luck! Looks like a great start.

thanks! I haven’t tried to start it yet - will 100% remove old fuel before I do. The one thing I don’t have from the other ‘79 is the cis stuff that I had sent to CISflowtech. It was all perfect. Wish I hadn’t sold it all!

The WUR is easily accessible on the 928. So I would drain the tank, see what the fuel looks like. If it's dark red, plan on take removal and flush our. If it looks and smells fairly decent, I would replace the filter, remove and clean the WUR screen and go from there. Once the pump runs, it can load the system with sediment. I learned the important lesson some 12 years ago.

Good work! That one could have easily ended up in the scrap yard. I don't envy you trying to figure out electricals.

Do you mind sharing what you paid?

Nice find. My favorite era. And nice colors. And a stick.
Would be way outside my comfort zone to try. Seems like you have the confidence to do it though! Document your progress!
Cheers

Thanks, I paid a bit less than that actually. I thought it was a steal for a complete straight 5 speed but it seems some think I overpaid

A very nice find, and a manual too, great! If it starts right up after your initial petrol- and electric-service then its a real steal for sure! Update with more pictures..

In the last 2 years we have bought for $500 & $1200. Non-runners are $1500

If you're patient and a little bit adventurous, there are still deals to be had!

But I think the prices are flat and might even start going down, rather than up. I'm seeing more and more cars being unloaded by old folks or by their estates, and nobody is queuing up to buy them. There will always be anomalies, such as famous cars like the RB car, well-restored early cars, or unicorns like Perlglanz. But the vast majority of these cars are going to stay firmly in the '10 year old Camry' price range.

If you decide you want to rebuild that harness yourself (rather than buying a $1000 harness for your $2000 car), I probably have all the right wire colors in the updated materials (TXL?) for all the smaller wires. I recently redid my '88 front harness and had to buy 25' of everything. Just let me know the lengths and colors you need.
