Awesome car!
my 79 is “supposed” to be Oak Green Metallic”
found the original paint under the windshield pillar covers when I removed the dash, and under the rear hatch receiver cover…might want to check there!
Made some progress over the past couple of weeks. Cleaned it up and started to dig into the engine stuff. Drained the fuel (about 2 gallons and pretty clear, but not strong smelling). When I dropped the fuel pump cover, was surprised that there was no filter. The filter on the 79 is in the passenger rear well. Verified it's LSD by both number and spinning wheels. Looks pretty clean under there and unmolested. Was able to rotate the crank and verified the cams were both turning. Next steps are to get a battery and some fresh fuel (and berrymans) and see if she'll fire up.
G28/03/12 "frame rails" look unsquashed 928.111.031.04 Looks like 08.78 (original) Fuel filter and accumulator in passenger wheel well Cleaned up nicely and leather/vinyl looks OK
Just a few subtle random things I've noticed working on this 79. No red lights in the lower rear door. No interior lights in the doors under the vents. No interior lights on the rear hatch. No under dash tray on drivers side (unless mines missing).
Mine has a coin thing in the drivers door, but looking at Robs 78 Petrol Blau resto, he doesn't have one.
I'm sure the list will grow as I go through it.
Little to report this weekend. Fresh gas and can of berryman's. Cleaned the fuse panel. All relays and connections looked great (a few with some rust). Got that all scraped off and de-oxit on all. Pulled the fuel line on the fuel distributor and it all looked clean there (no screen though? Maybe removed at some point?). Flushed the connection at the WUR per the CIS doc on 928 Classics page. The battery was holding charge well overnight, so I tossed it in and jumpered the fuel pump. Ran the pump for a good couple of hours. Sounded good overall.
Decided I would try to start and...............starter spun but didn't kick out. Got under and tapped a few times to see if I could loosen up the solenoid, but no luck.
Have spare starter that came with the car, so will test and then swap next week....
getting closer.
Just my opinion. Here in Germany, it seems that often, some the older 79/80 cars do not have the sunroof option. And many of the later years do not have rear air. There are even a few later models without sunroofs over here. I’m no expert at production numbers that is for sure! Lol

Had a chance to get back to it today.
Bench tested the spare starter and it worked well. Got it up on jack stands and swapped out the old starter. Tested it too and it wanted to kick out but was probably so rusted/corroded that it wouldn't come out all the way.
Guessing it's original.
Put in the new starter and buttoned everything back up. Crossed my fingers.....and.........................................
It fired right up!!! There was some valve clatter, but cleared up right away. Pretty stoked that it ran and ran so well.
Next I had to pull the slave out since it was holding the clutch open. It was pretty much toast, but took out the rod, put it in gear and started (while on the jack stands) and wheels were spinning.
Now to get the slave rebuilt (or replaced), change out the fluids and see if I can get it on the road for it's inaugural road test
One more thing I noticed. When putting the seatback (passenger side) forward, the seat actually moves forward ( by motor)? Is this feature or a bug LOL? My 89 doesn't do this.
