I suppose that I’m in the minority here as I rather like the look of the spoilers on the S.

Except for that fugly S spoiler the 928 would be clear winner. I hate that ugly thing.

Function trumps form, in this case.
As 928's made more power and the top speeds increased,
that "fugly" rear spoiler became very important.

Greg, my thought was that this was pretty much only about form. I suppose that the 928 may in fact be more aerodynamic backwards, but that it not the question. The XKE looks to me like a car that was designed nicely and then put onto a Model A Ford frame and undercarriage. As to the quality of construction, if that were also a question here, the XKE looses out big time. I can tell you about a friend of mine who had a new one that was kind of lightly rear ended and which bent every panel on the whole car. But that too has nothing to do with the question of beauty.

The picture with this thread seems to suggest that this is just between the XKE and the 928, but the title seems to me to make a broader suggestion. I have been involved with cars since most of you were born and that is about from 1953 or so. My vote for the most beautiful car ever built is the 1932 Ford, in all of it's iterations.

I mean, that Jag is very pretty, I have always liked them. But the 928 is a more pure shape. It's hard to imagine an improvement on that basic silhouette.
Cheers

Timeless beauty. It truly is - to me - the most beautiful car ever made. Of course there are other beautiful cars, and this is obviously highly subjective, but this one stands alone at the pinnacle for me.

Here's one for the purists, without the rear spoiler (which I like too, both with and without):

Agree that the jag is more fragile but it’s nearly 20 years older and from a different era, this is what Porsche were producing in 1961 and that wouldn't stand up to any kind of impact.

Also the E type was built down to a price, whereas the 928 certainly was not. Great cars both though

The 928 was a cost no object exercise in engineering, same for the 959. Porsche stopped building such cars for mainstream production as it almost drove them out of business. Now it’s all about cookie cutter disposable utilities.

The for Jag, i think the E-type convertible was a beauty (specially in the restromod version Eagle Speedster form), but the 928 trumps them all.

I have always thought 85 was the year. The spoilers front and rear turn it into something mean looking. (jag's best 55 D type)

nice angle
