Flywheel Cracks
Neither time nor finances allowed for the flywheel to be skimmed, but there are definitely some surface cracks. Are they anything to be concerned about? The pressure plate was pressumably replaced at some stage as it was in much better condition.

It's pretty cheap to have it machined, $30-40 at the most (don't know what it'd run you in the UK). If machining it destroys the flywheel, then the new clutch would have done the same in no time. Cheap insurance ...

Your flywheel does look bad, you MUST at least get it resurfaced to see if it cleans up (I doubt it). If you had ever seen a flywheel let go you would not even consider using it as it is (chunks would take your foot off, that's why steel flywheels are mandatory in motorsport)
Nick resurfaced Adrian's for free I think, also I think Adrian has a spare flywheel, whether he will sell it (& at what price !) is another matter.

FWIW I had mine resurfaced this week for $26. I did put "'83 Audi 100" on the work order and attached a cropped copy of the manual page. This helps to avoid the "Porsche tax."

I agree, replace it. That one long crack at the 2:00 position looks like a disaster waiting to happen, as it seems to have progressed well beyond "surface crack".

Thanks everyone, but that's not the answer I needed, what you meant to say was: "Nah - that's nothing to worry about"
I'll add it to my list of things to do. The front discs definitely take precidence though, I know they must be well out of spec as they have approx 3mm lip on either side.

Paul that flywheel is one of the very worst abused units I have ever seen . It really needs to be replaced even if with just a good used one .

Five years and 40,000 miles later
Five years later and things are now much much worse. Even I can't put this back on the car. But neither can I afford $600 for a new one. What do I do now?

what in the HECK did someone do to that flywheel. It looks like my old half season old brake rotors! I pulled my flywheel and clutch out after 7 full racing seasons and still had the white part numbers on the clutch discs! everything looked brand new, including the flywheel . Is this car parallel parking in San Francisco on a daily basis?

I would replace it. if you've never seen what high energy rotating parts can do on failure take a glance at this. It was probably turning about 10000 RPM, but your car wouldn't look any better if your flywheel decides to let go.
