But what the heck is in that alternator cooling hose? Most are oil soaked and I would've thought that'd be the first thing to go.

The alternator cooling hose is down about as low as you can get, heat rises.

Oil does not ignite like fuel vapor does, it needs help..

A simple fuel fire wont get that hot...now..if this was in a pile of burning rubble, it would be different.

Other than the edges of the motor, it likely never got over operating temperature.

Well, actually the manifold and cam covers are fine, too.

Here's the inside of one of the cam covers.

Nothing warped, but several aluminum ingots left over form the hood.

Another really cool project, Kev. Congrats on another great acquisition.
I have no doubt that you'll have that engine looking like new again in no time.
Looking forward to following along...

The cam covers and manifold sides are wall art, but the intake manifold survived.

If you want to get the manifold coating off in chucks all you have to do is set the car on fire. Lesson learned.

Thanks. The bores are perfect - best I've ever seen and the pistons look amazing for a GTS. A very healthy engine.

As Jim said. And, that updraft draws cool air from below. Thus, the cooling hose is pretty much unaffected. just sitting there in a warm breeze flowing up and getting much hotter in the intake area..
