Hey guys, I am just now starting a mild restoration on an '87 928 S4 for one of my clients. Her husband bought her the car new and passed away a year ago and she wants me to get it back to solid mechanical and cosmetic shape. Has 70k miles on it and been well cared for other than a crappy repaint 15 years ago and being left sitting too long. Anyways all the rubber bumper beading is deteriorated front and rear. Do the bumpers have to be removed to replace these?
Look forward to tackling this project. Already fixed numerous electrical issues and after my research sounds like I have a lot more things to check lol.
the PU covers need to be removed to remove the beading,
its stapled on with 4 MM staples
the new beading comes with sticky glue ,
but once the beading gets hot it could come loose,
so staples are a perfect way to make sure it stays where you put it.
NOTE PU means Polyeurethane cover or bumper cover,
I call them PU covers

Just ensure that you use stainless Staples. The body man that painted my car installed regular Staples which rusted out. I pulled the bumpers and installed new beading from Porsche with stainless Staples and silicone.
Thanks a ton for all the advice guys! Decided car is going to get a full resto now so will replace it all when we tear it down for paint and will make sure I use stainless staples on it!
The beading for 87+ cars has a self adhesive backing. This allows for the beading to be held in place until the panels are bolted together. The panels then hold the beading firmly in place.
