When and where can I see you on track? I believe you're racing next weekend, is it?

Pretty cool, but should have been a 928! Looking at the video though, it would have been a lot less "exciting" in a 928. Man, look at the way the driver has to work the wheel in the 911 to keep the backend under control.....yikes!

I was thinking the same thing about a 928 being less dramatic, then noticed the "RUF" sticker on the side and looked closer - if I'm not mistaken, that's a RUF YellowBird. If so, we're talking 550+hp in a ~2900 lb car. No wonder it takes some work!

I couldn't tell for sure, but the inside shots look like the driver isn't wearing a helmet, but the shots from outside clearly show a white helmet through the window.

Cool video, but the Frank Stippler lap posted a couple months ago (sorry, I don't have the link) was MUCH more impressive.

That is the Ruf Fazination video of the Yellow Bird on the "ring. It is a factory test driver behind the wheel, and he is not working to keep the tail behind him, he is using the rear weight bias to his advantage. Look closely and you will not see his right foot hit the brakes but you will see him set up his drifts and also see him exit the corners faster by maintaining speed through them. He knows what he is doing. If anyone wants the complete video, send me a blank video and the postage and I will record one for you.

Wow. I've always wanted to drive that track. I almost feel like I have! I too kept thinking, "a 928 wouldn't be so wild in the corners". Maybe someday I'll find out, Until then it's Co. 4, my own personal 'Ring. - Ruf

No one said he didn't know what he was doing, but still looks like a lot of work to get the most out of the car.......almost looks like he could have lost it a few times coming out of a curve also. Very skilled driver though.....

I believe Hans Stuck has already done it.

Drifting always looks faster from the inside of the car. (guys is very busy) all that sawing at the wheel is not fast. drifting is a very slow way around the track. Looks cool, and his actions on the wheel show he is trying to keep the back end sideways, not the other way around. 911s are not that tail happy. Poor drivers can make 911s tail happy, but in my years of running in POC, NASA, PRC, and Speed World challenge. Ive seen a lot of fast porsches. their rear ends NEVER get a wiggle. He is working (as you said) to NOT keep the rear end behind him, but it CERTAINLY is not to any advantage, except for the " hollywood" factor for the video. NO advantage to keep exit speed up either!

500hp of a ruf turbo, and 3000lbs is about SpeedGT spec. even a 959 driven by a couple of the best road racers around, run pretty slow on street tires compared to many of the cars we see at normal club events.
Even my gutted 84 928 at 3000lbs ran a faster time on the same tires as 5 pumped up 911 turbos ranging from a 2002, a 959, and a 500hp 993TT.
all driven by Kevin buckler and danny Sullivan at Sears Point. (excellence 2002)

wanna see fast, look at real race car incar footage. much more calm and tremendously faster, than this guy on the edge. If you are ever on a race track and see a guy even get a slight wiggle, you are usually by him real quick!

Its a great video, love the burning rubber. BUT, its not fast!

I think Stuck did a fast lap in a 928 when the factory was comparing times at the "ring" against a current 911.

Here is a lap against a ZO6 SCCA record holder that got just a little wiggle after 15 laps of racing on his bumper. look what happens to him.

Check out the latest (April?) Sports Car International magazine in which they do a track comparison of the 996 GT3, Z06, and Mitsu Evo VIII RS. Once again they use Kevin Buckler as their test driver at Sears Point. Laptimes were:

1:51.xx GT3
1:54.xx Z06
1:58.xx Evo

All times were done in completely stock cars on stock rubber. He had a couple sessions to familiarize himself with each car. I think 1:51 is pretty smokin' for a car you can drive straight off the showroom floor.

It seems like more fun than a gym session but if compared to my 928, well let me only say now I understand why the 911 owners usually ask for a pit stop every 30min on the mountain road fun trips.

Dennis,

Not to take anything away from the GT3, but the fact that the EVO 8 RS is only 7 seconds a laps down for, what, $70K less, would seem to be a bit impressive too.

I do agree with Mark, if you watch in car vid from most races (I would exclude NASCAR, and of course, Rally stuff) the guy furiously sawing at the wheel usually has a problem that he is trying to compensate for. "Smooth" is generally the operative word of the winner's circle. When you drift a car, you are inducing way more friction than a smooth path through the corner. Once again, does not really apply in 'rally' scenarios.

Speaking of "drifting", anybody actually seen this drifting stuff live? I've seen a couple of drift competitions on vid, might be entertaining to see dirtrack action come to the tarmac at a racetrack. Or at least smell the rubber burning.

Greg
