Well...after H pointed out the raised hood on my 928 avatar..I thought I would see who here has had an embarassing breakdown moment with their 928....
I'll go first....
Heading over to our local region PCA Autocross (PNWR Region) over in Bremerton (on the Peninsula located west of Seattle). To get there you either drive for a couple of hours down and around Puget Sound..or drive to Seattle and take the Ferry which is what I did .. My 87 had an issue with the afterrun fan killing the battery. I got the car started in the am and figured no probs..as driving it will charge it enough..right?...well ..in this case ....no....after getting loaded on the ferry...middle row center of boat..I get out and go up on deck for the hour or so it takes to get there....come back down and get ready to disembark....turn key...nope..click click click...dang...and some other choice words...so...every car on the ferry that day got to drive by me..snickering at the broken down Porsche on the boat.....and to top it off...couldn't get a jump start on the boat per Coast Guard regs..so they had a tow motor "push" me off...
Got a jump ..and got on my way..man...must have been a full ferry that day too..
..so..anyone else?...
later,
Tom

Mine has to be when the throttle got stuck in the wide-open position. Not sure anyone could tell there was something wrong since I probably just looked like a speeding maniac.

After driving the PO of my car back home, I decided to spend some quality time with my new baby and give her a wash.
It just happened to be the same day that the local highschools were having their proms, so the neighbors and especially their children were all milling about in front of their homes waiting for the limos to show up. The guys are in tuxedos and their dates are all looking very nice in their evening gowns.
Of course, as I am washing the 928, many of the guys (and girls too) drop on by and admire the car and say things like, "I wish I could take your car to the prom...", etc. I am beside myself with pride.
My mother, who is watching all of this from the living room window finally comes out into the garage and sits down in a lawn chair. I look at her and smile and she says, "You're eating this up aren't you ?". What can I say ? My other car is a Honda Accord and just does not get the compliments that the 928 receives.
Well, I am now done with the wash and I climb in to put the car away and to give these young things a thrill by showing them what a fine German V8 sounds like... tick, tick, tick, tick...
You guessed it. The battery is now too low and the car just ticks it's disapproval. The kids are laughing, I am swearing every word that I know and my mother... just gets up from her seat and with a knowing smile, says, "That sure is one pretty car you have there... ", waits a couple of seconds and turns around to go to the door. She gets to the door and as she is walking inside yells back, "Too bad it doesn't run !"
Mom died a few months after that. I will always remember that and laugh whenever I take myself too seriously. She was correct though... it is a pretty car !

In a moment of distraction I filled up my 928 with diesel fuel. I manged to get 100 yds down the road before the fuel lines filled up with it.
Then it was an embarassed call to the local Posche centre to get it low loaded to their workshop.

It was when I first picked up the car and didn't understand how the aftermarket alarm worked. I wound up driving it around for a while not knowing that the emergency lights were flashing before I figured out how to turn it off. I thought people were just admiring the car :-)
I then left it with the broker until I could arrange to pick it up the following week. By that time the &^%$ alarm system had drained the battery. After a new battery and some surgery to rip out the alarm, all was well again.

928 moment:
Cruising down the Pa Turnpike one early Sunday morning on way to a PCA Autocross car starts to sputter and then kaput. Quick scan I find I'm out of gas (GD gauge). One call and $50 later for 5 gal of gas I'm off and running. Embarassing part was it was the same weekend as Corvettes at Carlisle. Every one to pass had to beep and wave.
951:
Just picked up a 88 951 in Boulder and began to follow buddy towards Westminster. We're ripping thru rush hour traffic, I'm trying not to loose him as I have no clue where he was going. I suddenly feel cold air on my neck. The rear hatch decided to open, all the way up, I cna't stop w/o loosing him. He finally slows down and my throttle cable sticks wide open. Motor is screaming, hatch is flopping open, let me tell you, people will get out of your way. I left the car in the middle of the intersection went to call the looser dealer to come get it. Car sat there for 2 hours until they came.

Burger King drive through, it's raining out, I'm wearing a suit. As I order my food, I notice my wipers are moving pretty slow and the dash lights while not the easiest to see in daylight are imperceptible. The radio starts doing weird things, all I'm getting is static. I turn off everything, wondering what the cars ahead of me ordered that was taking so long. I accidentally hit the rear wiper button, it wipes once and stops. Bad sign. As I pull up to the window to get my food, she dies. Stone cold dead. Of course, my window won't roll down, and I'm too close to the pick up window to be able to open my door and get out. I crack the door open, and tell the drive-thru chick my car is dead, and has she ever driven a Porsche. She says no. I say "now's your chance, come on out and I'll push." She comes out with another burger flipper and a manager, and seeing that I'm trapped inside push me all the way out into the parking lot. Of course, the five cars behind me honked me a nice chorus. They brought my food out to the car, I called another local 928 owner who came out and put a meter on my car. Alternator dead. Battery dead. With a jump I was able to limp it home. Barely.
