Alright I'll make sure I give it a thorough going over when i get under it. apparently the previous owner bought it from a college kid as it is and tried to change the fluid figuring it would be a simple fix so it's any man's game as to what it could be. Damn college kids haha.

There's a process to fill the transmission that needs to be followed.

It's a bit different from most auto fills.

If not followed correctly, it won't be filled properly and it won't work correctly.

A proper fill would be the first thing I would try (there's instructions on here somewhere).

Welcome. You've found the best resource for these cars.

Greg (GregBBRD) and Stan (MrMerlin) are two very knowledgeable people.. They really know these cars. Listen to them (read what they post).

Thanks I'll be sure to go hunting for that. Any specific ATF I should be using?

Any reputable Dexron III ATF will work fine. At this point, with the transmission in question, I would say get two gallon jugs of SuperTech brand DEX III ATF from your local Wal-Mart. Cheapest you will find and is a good fluid. Plus it can be considered 'disposable' if the transmission is toast.

You will need to follow the procedure in WSM Volume 2, Section 38, page 38-27.
See below:

WSM Volume 2, Section 38, page 38-27.

NOTE: The 928 MUST be level for this fluid fill and check to be accurate! Meaning jack it up evenly at all four corners.

As for capacity, according to page 38-26, ATF capacity of the A22.01 3spd automatic for fluid change is 5.7 qts. However, page 30-013 calls for a capacity of 5.8 qts, including torque converter. It also lists the A28.** 4spd automatic as being approximately 6.5 qts for change including torque converter. I bring this up, because the A28.07 transmission in my Red Witch takes over 12 qts to refill after a filter change and draining the torque converter.

OK, enough rambling. On top of what Greg and Stan have suggested, here is my 2 cents:
-top off the transmission fluid in accordance with the WSM. If that makes a difference and the car now drives, GREAT! Do it again. Order a filter and gasket kit, and get enough of the DEX III of your particular tastes, and do a full fluid and filter change.
If topping off the fluid makes no change, move onto other troubleshooting.

Good Luck!!!

Aesome thanks for the info! I'll have to wait till I get some free time for her and try that out. If that fixes it I'll be set and on my way to a Cars and Coffee.

I think there is a used trans on Craigslist in the LA area for $300 or something, if you are really feeling like bottom feeding. Of course no warranty or history or anything.... The value of going to Mark is that not only is there a warranty, but they just know what they are doing.

I have to say, the 3sp auto is amazingly robust. My car broke a transmission cooler line a few years ago and barfed all the fluid out-fortunately just two blocks from home. It has a weepy main seal so I regularly have to check and refill. But the damn thing just keeps working! Follow the procedures above and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Your shopping for a new transmission instead of making sure that yours just doesn't need properly filled ATF?

Sorry I haven't been on in while, but I have an update for you all. The old transmission was filled to the proper levels when I bought it so I played around with it for a while. You can shift through all the gears and not notice any difference it's like theres no connection to the trans. So long story short i bought the trans for 150$ that was aforementioned in this thread. When I went to go pick it up the guy had another 928 there that he wanted to get rid of. Fast forward a month I just buttoned up the trans friday and took her out for a drive and then I went and bought the other 928. It's a 1979 black on black no sunroof 5spd manual with a rebuilt trans motor and basically redone everything for 4500. It just has some assembly required. You can see my motor in the background of the first pic.
