Default SoCal guys I have a transmission query for you.

So this is my first post in the forum. I just joined the ranks of 928 owners 2 weeks ago with a 1979 no sunroof, automatic, originally green then changed to red and I did it in the worst possible way with a project. However I'm young, dumb, and hopeful so here I am.

Onto the question, I think my primary pump is out in the transmission and I wanted to know if it would be worth it to take it to a shop or to just find a decent used transmission for now, and if shop is the answer which one? I'm trying to run all of this on budget so i would try my hand at replacing the pump myself but automatics are way to particular for me vs a simple 5spd. I just lost my ebay auction for a used transmission by $5 so now I'm lost as to what to do.

Hmm, how much would I have to tear into it then?

Not much.....

But pump failures are very, very rare.

And it's worth keeping in mind that the pump is after the filter. If it has gone "bad", all the debris has gone where?

Sounds like it's time for a new transmission then. It only has 56k on it and I'm relying a lot on what the previous owner told me.

Were it me I'd get a AAA membership, then have it towed up to Greg at Precision Motorwerks for a diagnostic workup, so you know what's actually going on. 928 Intl has a ton of used early transmissions for $1000, but it may be that with only 56K that Greg can repair what's ailing yours for less than $1000. Either way you're within 30 minutes of world class 928 help, at least when there's no traffic.

I've had these 3 speeds come in with no fluid....won't move forward or backwards.

That would be the first thing to check, before running the car, any further.

Welcome Rags,

Thanks for the pics.
Um yeah, what Greg said, I think the first thing I would do is change the fluid and filter! Prior to doing so read up on the proper process for confirming the proper fill level. It is not just fill-and-go on your car.
You might be amazed at what new tranny fluid at the proper level will do!

I saw that car a lot on craigslist. Was tempted to get it but I have 2 projects already lol. Welcome to the asylum! I mean list

I also noticed you live with middle schoolers because of that 3rd photo

Do what the others say and give the trans a good service and see what happens. These old MB sourced units are fairly reliable and don't often have catastrophic failures.

Greg is the go to guy for trans issues. He knows them better than anyone else out there that I know of.

Welcome to the site
Since you didn’t post any symptoms nor any diagnostic info it makes it difficult to give DIY directions

That said a low fluid condition is the first thing to investigate you need a lift or 4 strong jack stands
Note don’t run the engine any more than necessary to check the fluid level if it’s low internal damage will happen
The trans is filled from the bottom of the car and it’s a bit of time to fill it
Early cars are usually in need of new fluid lines as originals are brittle Greg Brown sells hose kits for DIY

If your not handy with a toolbox then sending him your car would be one thing I would consider
Note stay away from transmission shops that don’t specialize in 928 machines

Thanks you guys, I know I haven't posted any symptoms I haven't had time to really look at it as I have it at my brother's house for the moment. I'm waiting to get plates on it to bring it up here so they fine me on it. The previous owner said he did a fluid change on it and thought that would fix it but he said no change so I'm just gonna have to give it a thorough going over I'll keep you all updated on it.

The other thing to check is to make sure the axles have not become disconnected from the drive flanges on either side or end, keeping power from reaching the wheels and tires.
