'89 5 speed is a great model and high up in my ranking of desireability! Congrats. You mite want to post some pics of the engine bay too!
Out of personal experience, I would say change the rubber brake lines and the MC. Neither are very expensive.
I have never seen another 928 in Downstate Illinois. So, I would have probably gone nuts, if something like that happened to me!

On my '88 the caliper pistons do not have rubber boots protecting them from the elements the way most production cars do. So my caliper dragging problem was that the pistons had become pitted and were hanging up. Roger was able to get me new pistons. If all four are dragging equally, I would suspect something more along the lines of a master, but perhaps worth a look.

Thanks everyone.
I'm going to replace the MC and the brake lines with some 928 Motorsport braided lines and we'll see if everything works. Looks like I need to bleed the clutch system when I do the brakes. I just ordered the parts so tonight it's time to take it apart.

Looks great, you have US #63, I have #81.
My car also dragged the brakes when I got it, replacing the master cylinder fixed it. Pull off the vacuum hose to the brake booster and check if brake fluid leaked inside, if yes, then replace the booster as well.

There were only 200 manual S4. There were also a 116 89 GTs made (with manual trans). These are only US numbers. Add in the Rest Of the World (ROW) and the numbers are higher.
89 was the only year where there were manual S4 and GT cars sold side by side. After that, all the S4 were auto, all the manual were GT.
Welcome (I forgot to do that earlier - Duh).
Gorgeous car. Congrats.
I have to wonder if your wife negotiating the deal helped by convincing the former owner that she was on board too. That isn't always the case, and it can result in the car being sold quickly or neglected.
Everything you need to know about these cars is on here. Somewhere.
For example, the production numbers. I didn't just pull them out of thin air (or somewhere else).

Interesting, so in '89, what differentiated a manual trans S4 from a GT - engine, wheels, suspension, LSD, etc?

Engine mostly. Shifter was different, as were the wheels. Probably some other stuff too. The real experts will likely correct me (which is fine by me).
In 89, there was an option, the GT 'package'. Technically, the "GT" cars were manual S4s with the GT option.
I don't know the code off hand.

1989 is an interesting model-year with four different models!
928 S4 automatic: 2.577, of which 873 for North-America (US+Canada)
928 S4 manual: 556 worlwide, of which 201 for North-America (US+Canada)
928 CS (manual only, of course): 7 RoW only
928 GT (manual only, of course): 473, of which 115 for North-America (US+Canada)
The 1989 GT is a limited edition model produced between March and July 1989. In essence, this is a manual S4 with CS modifications (camshafts, ECUs, exhaust, rims, gearbox and gearbox lever,...) but without the reduction of equipment of the CS.
So, the GT share these equipment codes with the CS:
I167, if Bridgestone RE-71 tires were chosen
M220, Locking differential
I393, CS rims
M474, if sport shocks were chosen
But the 1989 GT have the M639 specific equipment code, whereas the CS has M637.
