Damn. It really does put into perspective as to how intense these fires got. It *melted* the f******g engine. that is nuts.

Shocking as that image is it should come as no surprise given the vehicle was in the middle of a firestorm. The main accelerant for these fires is wood. Once the wood has been reduced to charcoal it burns at around 1000C very much like gasoline and the howling winds generated support nigh on perfect combustion. Nothing much any fire department can do about these things apart from get people out of there. This is exactly what happened to Hamburg and Dresden during WW2 only they were not induced by nature.

The "interesting bit" is how the insulating top section of both coils survived. They must be made of Bakelite or more likely a modern equivalent of such.

@Mark Anderson What are you doing with the car? Are you really looking for any parts off of it?

Man, I almost spit out coffee when I was reading some of your comments.

I would cut the crank off at the back and keep the assembly. Pretty amazing story and something you wouldn't believe unless you saw it.

I think people are so removed from nature they forget how hot a fire stove can burn with a good draft. Just think of an endless supply of live trees and undergrowth. Unstoppable.

WOW.....living only 90 miles away from the fires, the smoke was oppressive....but that poor 928....it had to get stupid hot for a very long time....I'd guess nothing in it is salvageable.... I also vote for an 85-86.5 USA 5 speed....
