New Battery in place
We wanted the most authentic looking battery for 01117. This means having a white case. The vintage Mercedes and BMW guys have searched every corner as the supply alternatives have shrunken. Mercedes has one white battery left. It is a brand labeled from Interstate and you have to buy at the dealership at $300. It won't fit an early 928 box. Next alternative is this BMW battery, well technically it is Mini Cooper battery. It's white and it matches what the car came with. See attached from the January 1978 owners manual.
The rope handle design is NLA but the six cell configuration and + / - post positions are noted.
Through the magic of sticker removal and having friends in high places with printers............
We will slide this forward to match the original. Next we will fabricate a simple block to hold the battery from sliding back and forth. With this battery being tall, the amo box lid will fit, so up and down motion can be controlled with some very light clamping pressure.

problems with the A/C fan / current draw
Someone (PO) had mickey moused the CE panel with some crude industrial wiring to try and address the high current draw coming through fuse 16. All scary stuff and now removed. Looking at fuse holder 16 it was clear it was overheating, trying to provide enough current to drive the large Bosch fan in front of the condenser.
I am not one to change the original design, but it is clear that as the fan motor ages, it need more amps than the harness and CE panel can deliver. So, the proposed solution...... I made a small relay harness that will fit underneath the hood latch panel. This device is fully reversable to stock and uses the original style two pin Molex connectors. It is the OEM large A/C relay (50 amp?) taken from the CE panel. A new lead (+12v) is connected to the Jump post and this moves all the high current switching to the front of the car - only a few feet between the jump post and the fan assembly. The original wiring at the CE panel and HVAC console all remains stock. The connector that use to connect the motor now controls this forward relay. Hopeful this crushes the problem.

last items / update
The side reflectors got a lot of love with polishing, new bulbs, gasket lubing. etc.. The right rear was no longer acceptable so up to 928 International I go for a replacement. This one is bizarre. They have over 100 rear reflectors in stock. See attached below. All left side. After scrounging for 20 minutes I found one last right side reflector. This photo is all that is left. Left side only.
Says something about 928 drivers when all of the right side reflectors have been consumed.
Tom recalled that as well. Crashing that right rear must be much more common. Weird.
With the last reflector in place, one more item off the punch list.

Or Pichai forgets to go back to the right rear corner after he drops the fuel tank?

Saving key pieces of the carpeting
We are trying to salvage as much of the original carpet padding material as possible. We've separated the hex patterned horse hair(?) backing material from the actual carpeting. Then used this carpet as a pattern for new black carpet. New binding material took so work to source and redye in the correct black on the back side. Bugs is my upholsterer and has the patience and precision for this work. Here is the first batch coming back. The heal pad is the original just removed and resewn in the exact same spot.

P80 THX is the preferred formulation, as it's more a gel and doesn't run all over everything. The sweet spot is to go in on a case of 9 bottles, which is a lifetime supply for 9 DIYers. Mark and/or Roger should stock it.

Re: shortage of right side rear reflectors...
I've always assumed it was because of gas spilling on it during fueling

Working the punch list
Big afternoon knocking items off the punch list. We have functioning outside rear view mirrors. It just looks like a mirror. Unless you've done a pair including rerouting the wire harness. Just waiting for a new controller switch.

functioning headlamps
Another item off the list: Fitting the headlamp covers and having no interference problems. Note the alignment actuation via the new hydraulic headlamp control. This one item is probably more gratifying than a fresh engine start. Well almost.

OK experts: a quick question on one item
Here is a passenger side footwell carpeting. The triangle -allegedly- is for a Porsche First Aid kit. (this carpet piece did not come out of 01117)
Question: Did Porsche provide this first aid kit as original equipment on 1978 U.S. market 928's?
Thank you in advance if you know the answer,

OK, here is a another clue:
Image below is lifted from the page 135 Service Information Book. There are full vehicle images in the book showing a U.S. market car on page 106

diagnosing the vacuum leak in the door locks
One more item off the list. Pass. door lock would not operate and it is actuated by a two way vacuum diaphragm. I remember them working before disassembly last year. After chasing down the hissing sound into the interior I found the leak at the HVAC controls. Now back in working order and holding vacuum.
