Took the car on it's longest trip so far today. About a 300 mile round trip to Clemson, SC. Aside from a wheel vibration around 75mph (why does it seem like that's so common anymore?) I only had some minor AC related issues. On the way up the AC evaporator froze up (I never replaced the freeze switch). It made an absolutely massive puddle under the car from it melting (I know for sure the drain isn't clogged). The second AC related problem is that when going around long right hand turns (cloverleafs) some water must be leaking from the hvac box because I got some drops of water on my foot.

Apart from those two (extremely minor) problems the car made the trip fine. Even managed to get 19mpg, which isn't bad considering I wasn't exactly driving slowly (lets just say the wheel vibration goes away around 100).

Now I've got the most important thing after the jump post cover, the gas cap/"oil ok" flap. Old grommet was quite crusty and the flap was missing.

Neat, didn't realize these cars had that. Where did you get it?

Grommet and flap came from Roger. I already had the snap ring, but if you don't you'll need it to hold the flap in.

On that wheel vibration, have you checked tie rods on both sides for slop?

I checked over the front end last year and didn't find anything sloppy up front. Rack has new bushings too.

It's hard to tell for sure, but it seems more like the whole car is shaking more than just the steering wheel, so I have been suspecting the rear. I know it's not the trans or torque tube since I had the same vibration when the car was an automatic as well.

Cv axles are have been the same the whole time. About a year and a half ago I took them out and regressed and rebooted them. Didn't find any slop in them. Suppose that doesn't rule them out though.

Brake rotors have been replaced since too. The hubs/bearings haven't been changed, but again I haven't had slop in them or felt anything unusual rotating them.

Then of course it could just be the wheels and tires. The tires that were on these wheels to begin with were old and had a bulge, so they never went on the highway. That leaves me not knowing if things were in balance before having them swapped.

I suppose the cheapest/easiest to try would be going back to firestone and having them rebalance the wheels. Pretty sure they came with free rebalancing.

I saw a video online where a guy used this stuff called
solution finish solution finish
to restore some trim pieces. Figured I'd give it a try and it seems like it worked pretty well. If you ignore that the spoiler is broken, shrunk, and has chunks missing it doesn't look half bad. At least it's better than the faded ugly thing it was before.

On the rear spoiler I got impatient waiting for amazon and used some meguiars back to black. It's better than it was, but at some point I think I'll wash off the back to black and use the solution finish on it as well.

It makes sense to a wheel and tire balance. also and alignment might be in order as well.

FWIW after you get done putting Vaseline on your stock flat wheels try some on the black trim it seems to rejuvenate the plastics

Fresh out of that right now, but I may have to try that too.

Last time I had significant vibration I had a wheel out of round. Can also be flat spots on tires if it has been sitting.

Yeah, getting the wheels balanced/checked is definitely the logical thing to do first, I've just been putting off doing it. There's a guy across town that specializes in classic Porsches that I've been meaning to pay a visit to get an alignment too.

I've tried upholstery and it isn't my strong suit (there is evidence of that in this thread). The driver's seat and the rear passenger's side seat both were past it. I got a local shop to redo those seats for me and redye all the tan pieces in the interior to match (quite a lot was faded).

For the most part the tan all looks really good now.

The inserts on the driver's seat aren't perfect (I'll have to see if I can get some more cushioning in them, but there are no tears anymore.

Only downside is that the nice tan leather along with the dash make the blue armrests and center console look bad. So I'm going to have to have those redyed as well as see if the carpet can be dyed or replaced. At least the carpet I can fix myself hopefully.

The original gauge pod is also off getting covered to match the dash (and get rid of my pathetic attempt at it), but I still need to go collect it from the upholsterer.

Something small, but I have to keep myself occupied when the weather is too cold and wet to drive the car much.
