In SC
Welcome OCD -
Im in Duncan (between Greenville and Spartanburg) and have an 83 that is currently in project mode too.
Seth is in Blacksburg and has the red witch - it’s an 86.5. Chris Lockhart is also near me in Taylors and we have some other folks around the upstate as well. Several in Charlotte too.
plan to come to Sharks in the Mountains first weekend in June in Banner Elk NC - you’ll meet everyone and don’t have to bring the 928 to be welcome.
im in Columbia once or twice a month and would love to invite myself over to meet you.
good luck and ask everything on this forum. AWESOME people on here who love these cars and care for each other.

I'll check out those places for the computer(s). Looks like maybe the separate EZK and ECU were an 87+ thing?
I'll see what my schedule looks like in June. I think my youngest brother might actually be graduating from higschool in PA that week, so not sure if I'll be around. I'll definitely head up to it if I can though.

Well, first off - Welcome. Ignore the first guy (apparently his post has been removed, but you quoted it 'for posterity'). There are always a couple like that.
There are a lot more who are knowledgeable and willing to offer advice, suggestions and even help.
There are several in that area, and many of us are willing to take a bit of a road trip to go see your car and help out with stuff.
As was suggested, read the "New Visitor" sticky. It has lots and lots of good info.
For the TB/WP 'kit', call Roger Tyson at 928s R Us. He's a site sponsor, a well known and well respected vendor, and someone who knows and loves these cars (He has like 5 or 6 of them). You have an advantage with him, you have a "Rogerbox" (auto trans). He tends to look down his nose at those of us who prefer "pudding basins" (5 speeds). I would strongly suggest calling or e-mailing him rather than going to his website. The site is kind of "sparse". He carries everything. You can simply contact Roger and say "I'm doing a TB/WP on an 86.5, send me what I need". He can also send you a spreadsheet with what you would need and you can pick and choose.
There are a lot of very good writeups on the procedure. It's not all that difficult, but there are pitfalls. It can be very intimidating. But it's just 'parts bolted to parts'.
928 Specialists is another good place. As was noted, "Sharks in the Mountains" is coming up. You don't have to bring the 928, you don't even need to own one. If you go, you will find a bunch of very strange folks who have an attraction, even an obsession with these cars. You will not be the same after. You have been warned.
928 International is a great place for used parts.
The interior on the 84 will fit the 86.5 perfectly. They are the same body. The engine and ECUs are different. The 84 is a 16 valve, L-jet injection and 'green wire' ignition. The 86.5 is 32 valve, LH 2.2 injection, EZF ignition. Virtually nothing will interchange. There's a pretty good Wiki page on the 928, it's linked in the New Visitor sticky. Basic info, but handy.
And you took away our favorite sport. You posted pics.

As mentioned, Welcome to the Skark Tank! IF you find that you do need those computers I have various used ones here and will make you a smoking deal on them.
Feel free to contact us if you need anything and YES, do come to Sharks in the Mountains. If you serious about 928s and you are as close as you are, I promise it will be worth the trip.
Take care,
Dave

Wow. You've definitely bitten off a big mouthful with that car. That interior is as bad as any I can remember seeing here.
Just: Wow.
I'm a complete moron when it comes to wrenching, which is why I'm on this forum. You have absolutely come to the right place!
Believe it or not, the interiors in these can be the absolute hardest things to get back into reasonable shape. They were very leading edge for their time and, while the years elements have been hard on them in general, the interiors are made out of softer materials. Depending on your goals there, you might want to take a look at Matt Mariani's '928S RS thread. He did a 'lightweight' 928 with an interior that was functional and bare bones, but still attractive and complete.
You have my every hope for a good outcome with this car, and I hope to see you at Frenzy in September!

Just got back from getting the 84 today. Wound up taking a long time too because the steering was locked turned to the left (someone stole the keys out of it at some point apparently when stealing the catalytic converters). The seats in it are in very good shape, so they'll be going in the 86 for sure.
As far as direction, I'm not going for a restoration, but definitely something nice, comfortable, and that I wouldn't mind driving every day. Might go a little towards the sporty side, but definitely not a full blown race car.
And I'm pretty sure I'll be needing computers. I think I have one for the 84, but I don't have either of them for the 86 it seems.
Here's the 84. Other than that fender, the body is straight. I think the throttle body and airbox are missing, but otherwise, it's all there. I had to put the 968 wheels on it to get it trailered home. Definitely will be putting those on the 86.

Don't let 'Formula 1's comment get to you,OCD,.He's not typical of the people here...Check out 'SailorJeff's post 2-11-18. He's got a 'Junkyard save' car he's working on too...There's 2 ways of looking at these cars: Restore them to as close to factory as you can--OR-- Make it safe, make it fast, make it 'pretty' then 'Drive it till it dies' LOL I'm going the second way with my '83 Euro-S2...I DON'T CARE that I have the 'rattiest' 928 you ever seen..I've been to FRENZY twice and the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix last year with it. Looks like Sharks in the Mountains is a 'no-go' this year. Not so much as the car won't be up for it. It's just a long haul without a co-pilot LOL. I will make the Hershey Flea Market, the P.V.G.P. and Frenzy again this year..
I couldn't get or keep mine running without the friends I have here. It's my first 928 too although I've been a 'Hot -Rodder' since High School..928s are 'involved' to work on, but not technically difficult... If you run into a snag, post the problem here, come back in 3 days or so and you'll find people with answers here..

Hello captainOCD! Welcome to the Shark Tank, and the home of the Froot Loops. You have to be a little off to love a 928.
As Scott said, there is a good contingent of 928's in the Carolina's area. As well, this forum is an outstanding resource. Ignore any curmudgeons and trolls. Pretty much anything that can be done to a 928 has been done to a 928 and is documented SOMEWHERE here on Rennlist. You just have to find it.
Take the advice and read the new vistor sticky. Then, contact Roger for a set of the Morehouse CD's. Chock full of all the good essential vitamins and nutrients for the care and feeding of a 928.
For your computers, separate LH and EZF computers came out in 1985 USA spec, 1984 ROW spec. Prior engines had the L-jet computer inside the passenger compartment next to the CE panel, and the ignition amplifer/computer on the passenger's side front of the engine compartment. This connected to the distributor via the 'green' wire. 85US/84ROW had twin distributors. The ignition amplifiers were mounted on the header panel in front of the radiator. The EZF ignition computer was then mounted next to the LH-jet computer in the passenger compartment. You have two plugs in your 1986.5 because it needs two computers.
Take DR up on his generous offer for computers. He has a long history in the 928 world, and has quite the stash of parts.
Good Luck, and hope to read more of your saga with your sharks!

Is that a working Blaupunkt CD player in the 86.5? If so: hang on to it or offer it for sale/trade here. Blaupunkt radios have the right 'look' for the interiors of our cars and are sought-after.
If you can make it to Frenzy, I have a good set of door sills that I'm not using.

VIN on the 86 is WP0JB0924GS862400.
It does have a blaupunkt cd player, no idea if it works or not though. I want to pull out the carpet and go over the wiring before I hook up a battery. I saw a couple sketchy looking connections under the carpet of the passenger's side footwell that I want to address for sure. I do have what appears to be a manual for the cd player as well. It's pretty mildewy though.

Anything you need to do to or know about this car is on here...
Somewhere.
And if you can't find it, all you have to do is ask nicely. I've said more than once that the knowledge of these cars is complete on here. Nobody knows everything, but someone will know anything you can ask.
The WSM (Work Shop Manual) is essential for these cars. There's a link to a free download in the "New Visitor" sticky, or spend $75 to get the Moorehouse CD set from Roger. It's a small investment that will pay huge dividends. The set is very comprehensive, and includes a lot more than just the WSM. Tech specs, updates, all sorts of stuff. You're going to be spending a lot more with Roger in the future, you really won't notice that little bit extra.
You can put the VIN (for both of them) into the "Official VIN Check" thread. It's dropped back a few pages (page 4 last time I looked) but you can find out what options they originally came with.
And Samuel (928cs) is actually referring to the bumper cover, not the spoiler. Your 86.5 has no front spoiler, and the bumper cover has no brake ducts. That may well be an early bumper cover. I'm not totally up to speed on the various body configurations (I'm better at the mechanical stuff). Probably a replacement. Interesting.
The rear bumper cover on the 86.5 doesn't seem to be quite the same color too.
These cars often have interesting and sad histories. Part of the deal when you have an 'exotic supercar' that was selling for less than $10k for a long time. Idiots and fools bought them cheap and had no clue how to work on them. Or how much it would cost to do it right.

Welcome...I am slowly trying to whip an '86.5 into shape myself. It wasn't as bad as yours but still needed (and still needs) quite a few things.
One thing I found helpful with the "big jobs": Start a thread on that specifically, with a descriptive title. Document progress, include pictures, and definitely ask questions whenever you get stuck (searching first is always a good idea :-)). If you search for my timing belt thread you'll see what I'm talking about. I got stuck a bunch of times, some of it on stupid stuff, some of it not so stupid. Everyone was very helpful. You'll probably find things as you go that you need (I ended up replacing all the seals on the front of the motor due to oil leaks, for instance).
The sticky threads for new folks at the top of this forum have a lot of info, and keep your 928-specific vendors on speed dial. Roger at 928sRUs and Tom and Mark at 928International will generally know exactly what you need when you tell them your year and what you're trying to do.
