Default Bought a 928 project

Picked up an 86.5 today. It's been sitting for a while and has a "questionable" paint job. It was cheap though. Also picking up an 84 for parts (mainly interior parts).

I need to get an engine computer for it because it's missing. Exhaust got cut apart at some point for the catalytic converter from the look of it. Some other line got cut in the process that I can't identify at the moment.

I'm planning on doing a timing belt before trying to start the motor (any suggestions on a kit would be great) as well as fluids, etc. Also need to figure out why the shifter is stuck (went from park into neutral and then stuck).

Wow, thanks for the warm welcome. All those other cars are at the place I bought it from. Maybe coming here was a mistake if this is the attitude around here.

Welcome to the club. I have an early 86 project that was in similar shape. I recently finished doing the timing belt, resealing the front of the engine, intake refresh, cooling system refresh, fuel system refresh and now I am working on the brakes. The great thing about a car in this shape you have no illusions and you know it needs it all. The benefit is when you are done if you did it right you have many many years of happy ownership.

Most at people on this board are very helpful, there is another member bringin back his 86.5. You might find his thread helpful. If memory serves me right search for red witch.

Welcome! Contact Roger @ 928sRus. He can hook you up with all the parts you need for the timing belt job. Also it's likely you'll need to do a top end refresh (search will result in multiple threads) and complete fuel system overhaul. It's a long road to hoe but one that has been done many times by many folks and all of it documented here at some point.

The best part is that the 86.5 is the best of the original body style. Once finished you will have a desiried 928 for sure.

Bless your heart for wanting to bring another one back from the dead.

That other line you see next to the exhaust line is the line from the airpump through the EGR valve next to the Coolant reservoir under the hood.

Good Luck with your project. Please ask questions if you're not 1000% sure about something. There are lot of folks on this forum who are very knowledgeable and more than willing to help.

Keep posting and let us know what you are doing and take lots of pictures.

Welcome to the club OCD, thats a great machine when you have things sorted out.
The more pictures you post the better the guidance will be.
I would suggest to take the time to read the FAQ at the top of the page,
it takes about 4 days to go through.
It will save you a lot of money and get you up to speed on what to look for and how to fix your new project.
Once in a while some will toss out comments that might not be the most constructive,
dont take them to heart we all love our 928s and most have been where your starting.
We are here to help.
Oh before you know it you might have a collection of these cars, vying for your attention

John thanks for that Bless your heart,
I had a DO at my last flying job that always said that,

Welcome to RL. This is most definitely the place for quality info. Kind of an odd first greeting, but I'm sure it was in good humor. Interestingly enough it has the jump post cover!

Thank you very much for the kind words guys. I figured that one guy was just cranky or something last night, but it just makes you wonder.

This car is definitely going to be a long project, but that's why I bought it. I wanted something to work on for a while and keep me busy and then can drive for a long time afterwards.

I will definitely get searching for more info on the top end, fuel system, etc and checking out the FAQ. It's been sitting for about 15 years now, so I'm imaging most things will need at least a going over. The good thing is that even though it's sat outside for so long, it doesn't stay very damp in SC and I haven't seen rust anywhere other than the battery tray.

And I'm very relieved to hear that the cut line is for an airpump. I was worried it was a transmission line.

Aside from doing a timing belt before for a family member's 4cyl VW, this car is my first foray into the world of engines without the cam in the block, and multiple cams at that. I definitely have some learning to do.

"Bless your heart" is definitely something I never heard until moving to SC. You do hear it down here for sure though.

If things dry out some here today (high 30s and rainy at the moment) the plan is to go get the 84 today as well. I don't have any pictures of it at the moment, but will get some today if we go. It's seats are in pretty good shape compared to the crumbling ones in the 86. Originally I figured that car could be a parts car, but now after seeing all the differences with the 86.5 I'm not sure what all would exchange (I bought it knowing it was the 4.7 vs the 5.0). It seems like a complete car. My brother might end up buying it off of me after I get what i want from it, so might actually wind up getting 2 back on the road.

I did buy a set of wheels that I believe are from a 968 off a guy on craigslist (the 84 is on blocks right now). He pointed me in the direction of this forum and pointedout to me the 86 vs 86.5 thing, and sure enough my vin is a later one. I think these wheels will end up making it onto the 86 at some point.

So for now my plan is, after doing lots of research, to get the car driving so I can get it in my garage to work on more easily (driveway is way too steep to push it in).

Congrats on the acquisition and finding this place. No one knows these cars better than the collection of people here. I'm a 928 idiot and they still help me - guys like Stan - aka MrMerlin (who truly is a 928 Wizard), Greg Brown, drbob, and so many others.

Good luck with your project.

Welcome OCD, as everyone says there is loads of info on the site to help you, my experience has been that people are VERY generous with their time/advice/support.
If its an auto, the first check I would do is crankshaft endfloat to see if it is within acceptable range - whole different ballgame if not...

I'll add the crank endfloat to my list of things to check.

Here are some more photos. The interior is pretty rough, but hopefully the 84 parts transplant well. The electrics are definitely one of my bigger concerns. It looks like there are two connectors for computers, but I've only seen computers with one connector, so maybe there is something else for it to plug into? I think I also saw a picture with one just hanging there while poking around, so maybe it's something extra or for other markets? Photo of my connectors below with an 83 computer.

Where in SC are you?
I used to live in Columbia SC
I might have a painter connection for you.
That car takes the two computer version LH and EZF they are bolted to the same support housing
the 84 has a single computer.

Welcome. I joined the 928 community in 2014. I've since gotten some other vintage vehicles, each with a fine community of owners, but no other forum comes close to this one. You're going to need help, and you'll get it here. You seem to be getting up to speed quickly. We're all going to enjoy watching as you save this car.

Hey CaptainOCD - The 968 wheels are a good option 7x16 and 8x16 rears. I run them on my 1990 S4 and will be running some on my son's 1987 924S. Needless to say I like the look!

If you go looking for computers, you might consider a rebuilt one that is now known good vs one which is questionable.

Roger at 928sRus is great. The forum sponsor, 928 Specialists, are good people, too. They have an event the first weekend of June called Sharks In the Mountains (SITM) which hosts several dozen 928s in Banner Elk, NC (not too far from you) Their website is 928gt.com.

Also, since you're in this for the long haul and may need some obscure parts, 928 International is an awesome 928 Dismantler and New/Used parts purveyor. They have an annual sale (each Christmas) where used inventory is 50% off. It is good to build a wish list for that event!

Keep posting there are some high quality folks here (and it's easier to ignore the trolls)
