I have an early 86 parts car and an 84 that I drive regularly. We might be able to swap some stuff from your 84 for stuff you need for your 86. My cars are in Natchez MS. Holler if you are interested in discussing.

I am always in awe of guys who have the ambition to jump into such an enormous project! The 86.5 is a highly desirable model, so you're starting out on the right foot! And with a good '84 donor, you're really on the right track. The '84 wouldn't happen to be a manual, would it? I know plenty will argue for the autos, but a '86.5 manual would be an absolutely awesome car!

Please post plenty of Porsche project photos (PPPPPP)!

I wouldn't be opposed to trading parts around at some point. Might take me a while to get into things enough to figure out what all I need.

And these are both automatic cars. They guy I bought these from did have a manual car (an 83 maybe) but it way worse shape and was missing a good bit of suspension parts. I saw that clutches were about $1200 too and just said nope to that.

I wonder if the spoiler never got put back on the front of the 86 whenever that paintwork was done to it. It was parked at the guy's place to get bodywork done about 15 years ago. The 84 has the spoiler on the outer edges of the bumper, but it looks like a grille of some sort is missing from the center. There are a couple cracks on the bumper of the 86, so I suspect I'll end up using the one from the 84 on it.

The seats and most of the interior panels are in much better shape in the 84. The couple things that are trashed in the 84 (like the passenger's door card) are decent enough in the 86 that I can probably have them redone.

Let me add my welcome to the tank! You are in the right place, believe me, 12 years and almost 90K miles (total now >215K) after joining, these folks have made it possible for me to bring back and enjoy my 86.5 as a DD. You will get a lot of good advice here, especially about priorities, parts sources, and procedures- follow it and you will be a happy camper. Good luck and as everyone has said post your questions and progress!

Welcome CaptainOCD, and congtrats on picking up that 86.5! There are several 928r's with in a couple hours of you, I'm in Charlotte and have 2 '85's. My daughter is a USC grad, and I used to go the watch the the Gamecocks play at William Bryson stadium back in the day.
I had access to another '85 Auto that was a parts car, much of the S3 stuff is interchangeable. Sorry I do not have the computers, they where already gone. I do have some of the interior stuff from it [black], door cards ect.,also a r/h fender if you decide to save the '84 .. The seats in the '84 are slightly different but would bolt in. I have a passenger 85 seat, but could not get the driver's side out, its still in the car and would be rough.
If you decide to part out the '84, I would be interested in the engine wiring harness, if it is usable, also possibly the entire 4.7 engine. Let me know what you decide, and good luck with your project!

I graduated from USC in 2015.

Gonna be tied up the next couple weekends with stuff for the holiday, but hopefully after that I can get started tearing into these cars and get a better grasp of what I do and don't have.

Still working on sourcing computers cheaper than they're on ebay for. I put in inquiries with a couple junkyards, but probably being slow due to the holiday weekend.

I think both of these cars are going to wind up getting fixed up now though. After seeing the cars my parents seem to want to fix one up now too, so I forsee getting another parts car in the near future now.

Welcome. I'm from Oz and this place is the best 928 site bar none. The information and knowledge base here is extraordinary as is the camaraderie between 928 guys. My engine looked like yours but I'm making progress slowly.

Got back from visiting family today and some of the timing parts I ordered have arrived (belt, tensioner pulley, bushings, and kempf tool so far). Still waiting on the remaining timing parts. I also have a pair of computers on the way as well. I'm hoping to start working on the timing belt this weekend. I do still need to order a waterpump. I saw somewhere that there was a guy that rebuilt them, but then saw somewhere else that he retired now, so I guess I need to order a laso pump.
