Default Almost ready for intake refresh, some questions...

Hi, i have searched and read 928 oc guide and dwayne garage extensive intake refresh guide. Very useful. Now questions :
1 :intake gaskets must be positioned with a particular sealant, or no sealant?
2 blue oval gaskets : one side is yet covered with a blue sealant, the other side isn't. Which side of manifold is supposed to face The side with sealant?
3 have i to put some sealant on those blue oval gaskets?

My car is a '92 gts...

Thank you.

Francesco from italy

No sealant on intake gaskets.

It's too long since last intake refresh for me to remember about the throttle body gaskets - I don't even recall whether in my case one side had sealant on it!

<Thank you!
it's something that maybe worth nothing or it doesn't matter (if you forgot about that it menas it's probably nothing important) but I want to do things once and well, cause an intake refresh is not difficult but very long.(and I do not want to repeat the process twice in a short period of time).

No sealant on any intake gaskets. My gaskets had the blue stuff when they arrived but I think it is just a positioning aid and IIRC the old ones had it toward the intake. I'm sure someone here will pop in with the official answer but if not I will check my garage tablet for the disassembly photos and repost. My car is a 91 S4 auto.

This is the only big job I've done on my car solo. It's not too bad as you are probably finding, especially with those tutorials. Lessons learned: Get the MAS rebuilt and get the injectors cleaned. Make sure you clock the (new?) TPS correctly - just past the click. (Big hands shortcut) Make a 30cm/1 foot extension using Bosch 2 wire connectors to get the under-intake connection accessible from the back of the engine. Test the heck out of the fuel system by jumpering the fuel pump at the CE panel for several minutes and sniffing/feeling for gas.

My first took a month of nights and weekend afternoons. My second, fixing my screwups (see TPS above) took about 8 hours over a weekend. This is probably the single best service you can do to improve the car if it hasn't been done in a while. Good luck!

Thank you!
These informations are like gold.
I did TB before, scratching head to get the right timing ....this is long but not a complicated job.
For this job I got new knock sensors (front one is pretty gone), new TPS(have no WOT contact), new hoses, new, gaskets, new flap actuator, new ISV(for peace of mind), everything cleaned and intake will be powder coated .Injectors were cleaned last year, so I will change only seals .

Francisco,

I take it you understand what happens to the motor if it is contaminated with inappropriate blast media that is not removed from the inlet ,manifold and consequently gets into the motor? No desire to put you off doing this but do ensure you understand how thorough the post blast cleaning needs to be with most commercially available blasting processes. There are techniques that avoid this potential problem if you can avail of them.

Media blasting? I will take the intake to a shop that remove the coating using high pressure water. They usual take a Ferrari alluminium body to bare metal without damage, they work on magnesium wheels, they powder coat everything. Luckily they have a very similar silver for the intake, it is little lighter than zermatt silver.... Sand or Glass blasting or other media ruined the engine of my 1956 MV Agusta 250. Never again

Excellent! Do post some pics of what they do.

They tried to e plafoniera that a 1000bar jet can remove coatings without "withdrawing" material and without bending metal sheets, on Lancia Zagato cars, made of skinny alluminium sheets, it is essential, a lot of resto Action body shop take naked car bodies there to remove paint, rust, filler, putty compound, plaster.... And they start working on bare metal there was a Ferrari 246 body in the factory, when i as there to ask questions about the intake... I do not know how this method cannot make the metal oxidize or rust, that 246gt body was made 3 days before my visit, and had not rust at all. Really innovative method....

Just remember the mag alloy the inlet manifold is made from is very soft and is easily damaged by conventional media so make sure they know what material they are blasting. That you have a high tech solution on your doorstep is not too surprising..

Francesco - Are you also doing the valve covers? If you are, there's a couple things I'd add to the list such as hall sensor and cam chain pads. My advice, take LOT's of 1 meter away pictures so you can see what's connected to what and still zoom-in if needed. Especially when taking pictures of the vacuum hoses. FWIW it would be a good time to install one of Greg Brown's oil control plates too.
