quest for accurate temp gauge; '87 924s
Situation;
83 944 engine in an '87 924s
currently temp gauge rises slightly and stays there, just a little off stone cold
The temperature gauge sender is different (small button style in '83 block with no "probe" vs. a single spade larger thread sender the 924s gauge wants; with a probe) with different resistance values no doubt.
Possible solutions;
1) drill and tap the block to accept the larger 924s sender
2) swap the gauge in the dash; either the whole temp/fuel/idiot light nacelle or just the temp part, no idea how they hook up or how interchangeable they are.
Thoughts?

Shouldn't matter regarding the sensor - my early 85 has had the "late style" sensor since I bought it 10 years ago and it reads accurately...
How old is the sensor you have? They can "wear out" over time.
Also, a poor GROUND will cause havoc with 944 gauges...I have more gas in the tank when my headlights are on

here's the three sensors;

the sensors are not interchangeable, you can't put the little button non probe, early style into a later block, or vice versa, totally different threads. The resistance values are similar (according to Clark's) but different enough to matter I guess

I don't know the thread of the little button one, (anyone know?) went to swap in a probe style yesterday and then found the differences in threads, put button guy right back in. It could certainly be the style I have is fine, just this particular one is suspect, or the grounds aren't good enough. I assumed so far the sender itself won't work with the gauge but that could be bunk and it's just a bad ground or bad sender.

I have an 83 motor in my 86. I soldered one of the two leads from the 86 coolant temp wires to the pin head of the 83 sensor, and capped off the other lead. I cant remember which one I used; if I recall the idiot lighf gets stuck on if you reverse them. My gauge works fine and as far as I know, both early and late style temp senders have identical temperature/resistance curves.
