full manualization of the rack (strip it down, grease it and shim the valve body)
the rack i have currently just has been stripped and greased but without shimming the valve body, there is "on center free play". adding shims locks it down tight...
want to drop one and swap in the other in one swoop

very, very rare in the US.
they were only "standard equipment" for the 1983 model year (we didn't officially get a 1982 model like Europe) and even then a portion of the '83 cars were "upgraded" to power steering.
from 84-91 all US-market 944 came with power steering.
what compounds the problem is the intermediate "quadrant" shaft between the steering column and the rack itself - it is a different length than the power steering piece, and is NLA. so even if you find a good-condition manual steering rack, the intermediate shaft is going to be 33 years old and worn out with no new replacement available.

We must have a lot more cars then in the UK WITH Manual racks.
The 924S like my 87 and early 944's
I bought a brand new shaft for my Manual rack and as far as I'm aware they are still available new, would this be any different to your manual rack shaft? being LHD.
I reckon I can pick up some manual racks and shafts if they are worth sending to the US ?

due to the routing of the shaft i would imagine they are different RHD/LHD.
if you can round up some LHD manual 944 racks they are usually worth about $300 each, with the intermediate shaft included.

The RHD manual racks are obviously different from the LHD racks and the intermediate shafts are also clocked differently. Same for the power racks and the LHD intermediate shafts , power or manual, are nla anywhere. Iirc someone asked the question about 924 racks fitting 944's and they don't. Btw, someone here posted a rebuild service for all the intermediate shafts a while ago.

Yea, the 924 rack wouldn't work without some clever adapter to fit to the 944 crossmember.
Interestingly enough the 924 intermediate shaft is 1.25" longer than the 944 manual shaft.
