Question RHD power steering rack rebuild

howdy all,
Am about to attempt a reseal and regrease of my PS rack. My system is a RHD ZF. Looking at the tutorial on rennbay, the rack looks very different to mine. I will naturally need a reseal kit, are the seal kits compatible for both?

TIA

Travis from Rennbay will know the answer for sure, but I am about 90% sure the seals are the same, just in reverse order.

If the seals on your rack have failed, and your steering pump is the same age, the seals on it are probably on their way out as well. May want to consider both kits.

The seals are the same. Some steering racks had a different looking aluminum housing with a grid pattern cast into the outside. The insides are the same though.
The racks are the same except reversed.

Question

Thanks for that,
mine is the type with the tower housing complete, attached with 2 bolts, removal reveals the 3 seals on the shaft. I now want to remove the shaft and get to the bearings, but it doesn't want to move. I see on the rennbay site with the tutorial, the shaft and seals remain within the housing when the cap is removed, and explains to simply pull out the shaft....

this is where mine is very different.

would love to post a pic but cannot for another week!

any ideas??

Mine probably does, but I ended up getting a reconditioned rack. I am not confident enough to do a job like that, can't really afford to have the car off the road. Take plenty of pictures while you're at it.

Cheers,
Alex

Ok, first take the tube part off by unscrewing that collar ring. Then on the back of the housing (other side than we are seeing) you should see a small plate with 2 bolts. Under that is the pinion tensioning block thingy (technical .. I know). Take that off and it will relieve the tension on the pinion. Now pull that top shaft out while twisting it slightly as you do so. Unless it is pressed into some kind of bearing in the housing right there it should come out.

Thanks Travis,
I have got the tube and the tensioner off, that bearing seems to be in pretty firm, maybe a little heat?

I would not apply heat. You don't want to ruin any plastic lined bearings in there. You may need to use some type of gear puller setup to extract that shaft.

Have finally got the bugger apart - here are the results. Travis, can you tell me if your reseal kit will work with this one? the shuttle is a little different and the main valve is mounted on a bearing...

what does the seal for the shuttle look like... I assume its on the other side or it may be stuck in the housing.

Also, the seal in the bottom of the aluminum housing. How big is it (OD).

The bands look to be the same
