Since getting my first one in 2004, I've never needed a tow or rescue. There were two close calls, but both times I was able to jerry-rig it and drove home.
In my experience, 944s are very courteous - they tend to have problems in my own driveway. Dead batteries, dead speed/ref sensors, dead ignition cylinder, it's always been at home. In fact, just this morning, my '84 wouldn't start! I've been driving it for like 3 months without a hiccup!

I to have found these cars to be very reliable overall. I have only had minor problems that any other thirty year old car would have. The problem comes in when the parts prices are considered compared to other cars. This leads to incorrect repairs etc....

Zero tows since I bought my first 944 around 2001. Just gotta stay ahead of the problems. I was lucky I was able to limp home with a dying water pump once.

In the 16 years of ownership, I have only had to tow my 951 twice. Maybe I got lucky but my 944 turbo has been one of the most reliable cars I have ever owned. The car starts every time and drives great. There is no secret to this reliability as all I do is keep up with the maintenance schedule -- fluids and belts.

Now, I hope I haven't jinxed myself by telling these stories especially since my car has over 200,000 miles!

Clutch master cylinder failed on the way into work the other day, drove 8 miles (on and off the interstate) in third gear, encountered a miraculous string of green lights, and made it to the shop without a tow! But yeah, still not great.

My tow truck driver sends me a Christmas card every year... but he's only had my 944's on the hook twice in 8 years, once to deliver my new purchase, once due to a fuel pump that swallowed sand.
