Default 3D Printing 924 & 944 Parts - Development and Discussion

I figure there's enough interest to start our own thread on the topic of 3D printed parts for these cars...and keep the other threads on topic

Anyone should feel free to post ideas, part suggestions, or their own 924/944 printed parts.

Here's my latest prototype as requested for a replacement 944-110-177-00.

I rotated the printing orientation 180° from previous, and added a temporary rib to increase stiffness while printing.

I also increased the size to 100% scale, increased the perimeter wall thickness to 1.2mm (2 x 0.6mm nozzle), and bumped up infill to 90%.

The version I printed last week used 0.6mm perimeter wall thickness and 80% infill. I expect this one to hold vacuum/pressure much better, and if it does, I'm interested in getting the measurements/model or physical part off anyone following this.

I will share the model for free download, and if I'm confident with the performance I will sell the part to whoever is without a printer.

Questions:
1. Do I need to remove the 'rib' in the 'U' portion after printing, or can some portion of it remain without interfering with install?
2. Has anyone measured temperatures under the intake where this will be installed?
3. My understanding is this will operate under manifold vacuum - Correct?

Subscribing. Haven't printed anything for the 944 yet, but most of the others have printed parts on them.

This could offer some relief for those really hard to find parts.

What kind of tires should I use on my 15" phone dials? Is 225/55R15 really as wide as we can go?

Sorry!!! Had to throw this with car stuff, since we had been throwing the car threads off topic with 3D Printing!!!!

This is great stuff guys, keep it up!!! Honestly this is the future of car repair, this is just the beginning!!! You guys are the pioneers!!

This isn't an OEM part, but I had made an AFM delete pipe in SW last year I wanted to print, but it ended up being too expensive to have an online business print it. I don't need it anymore, but for anyone who is going to a speed/density conversion, this is ready to be tapped for 3/8" NPT (GM IAT sensor). I can't remember if I went back and added the 4 airbox holes or not after I took these screenshots. I have the SW file somewhere, happy to upload.

The best free 3D software I've found is Autodesk Fusion 360
http://www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360/overview
Although the site says trial and $25/mo, it should permit unlimited free usage for non-commercial and commercial under $100k/year.

YYC, I'm currently going thru a plastics lab with 3D printing in school. I could easily get your answer to question one, possibly as early as tomorrow.

My question: What all would people want 3D printed?

This is a great initiative and I think that as 3D printing develops and more materials can be used for printing, the opportunities will become very interesting.

Personally, I am looking for a HVAC button I am missing and I hate to spend over $100 for a used control unit if I can just have the specific button printed...

On the 944 I'll be starting with some grilles for the vents up by the windshield, a cup holder, and a rear license place relocation bracket to tuck it up a bit tighter.

On other cars, I've done vents/valves for a one-off heater, taillights, headlight adapters, wheel center caps, cruise control cable retainer, sun visor clips, random body plugs, mounts for radar and dash cams, switch mounting brackets, phone mounts, the list goes on.

I was thinking the same thing the other day, those buttons on the Climate control slides are always getting lost/

I haven't forgotten about the bellhousing plugs

TDC sensor plug fits perfectly! Plugs for the other sensors to follow - should be easy.

TDC 'view port' plug still needs some work. Next week.
