Default 944 Track Car 225 Pound Weight Loss

Well, as we all know, the coming of the New Year causes us to consider weight loss. Yes, I’m all in! Let me tell you how my track car lost 225 pounds in 30 days.

It started with a review of all the heavy items on the car that could be removed or replaced. Using my corner balance scales, here are some interesting numbers (note- # equals pounds):
Starting weight – 2501#
Front bumper – 30#
Rear bumper – 24#
Sunroof – 12#
Door – 38# (Stripped) 58# (Complete, with windows)
Hood – 42#
Rear hatch – 54#
Passenger seat – 26#
Headlight assy – 6#

I went to local metal supply house and purchased three 4′ x 8′ sheets of 1/16″ thick aluminum. About $225. A full 4×8 sheet weighs 14#. I started with the rear bumper. I started there because my metal shaping skills are only marginal and I wanted to get up to speed on an area that was not so obvious. Here is the result. 5# installed!

The wheels came with my 928, sourced by a previous owner. When I damaged one last summer and had to buy a replacement rim, here is what the folks in Germany who sold the wheels originally had to say:
These wheels are made by RH-Alurad in Germany.
Many people call this type Cup wheels. Porsche enthusiasts know them as "RH 3.6" or 3-piece "P-Rad".

I would gather that this means they are not actual Speedlines but are good quality repros.

Doug, the photos at the end of the article represent most of the better ones that I took for my photo shoot. The car's back in the garage waiting to go to the track in 3 weeks. The fenders are OEM, although I did roll them just a tad. I was really surprised these monster tires/wheels fit so well! I'm pretty much done for this year. I'll enjoy the new lightness of the car, until that becomes the "new normal". Then I may tackle some other pieces. But most of the worst offenders weight wise are gone.

You could drop another 40 or 50 lbs switching to Fuchs / Phone Dials vs those RHs.

Totally correct. I took Fuchs with Toyo RA1s off the car to mount this wheel/tire setup and depending on front or rear, the RHs are about 10 lbs heavier each. Again, like I said in the article, that particular switch is probably going to slow me down but I was motivated to get some positive use out of the Michelins we took off the wife's Cayman. BTW, I still have that turbo short block you sold me. That may be part of next winter's upgrade plan

And in an ironic turn, I will be looking to buy a good long / short block for a 951 this spring / summer (I think) for my latest rescue project.
