Are stock NAs just... loud?
My wife and kids say they can tell I'm almost home because the car is loud enough to hear from down the street. It doesn't just seem to be exhaust, either, it's just 'normal' car noise, but a lot of it. I do intend to do a thorough check for exhaust leaks, since I know those can be really loud, but are these cars just really loud in general?

There is a nice (but quiet) 'growl' to the exhaust around the 2500 or so mark up through about 3500, but it's otherwise unexceptional. Cat is there, and the exhaust tip looks original too. Beats the hell out of me...

Yes they are loud.
Belts are high pitched and can announce the car's arrival from a fair distance.
Even the stock exhaust system rumbles pretty hard.
My parents' dog heads to the door when I am still a quarter mile down the hill.

Agree these cars are loud stock, my NA is as stock as could be and it's audible a good distance off. When I let me buddy drive it and followed him, I was shocked how loud it was even when he was driving it nice and easy.

They are quiet when you're inside, and it's not a loud exhaust, but as mentioned above, the belt noise (or at least the noise from the front end) is unique and can be heard from a distance. Combine that with some low exhaust drone and you have a loud enough car that can be pinpointed from down the block, but perhaps only by knowing ears. My brother knows the sound of my car.

They are loud enough that my that my crotchety neighbor complained that it wakes him up in the morning if I let it idle in the driveway for more than a minute.

My dog knows the sound of my car...albeit, dogs have much sharper hearing than people. When I was DDing it last year, I was told he would he would get excited and start barking before the car was even in view. Stock-ish Bosal muffler and a basic resonator in place of the cat. I agree, I think it's a unique sounding engine.

Even with stock exhaust and being relatively quiet up close, my friends and family used to always hear my old 944 coming from blocks away, so your account sounds completely familiar and normal to me.

Ok, thanks for all the data points, everyone!
Seems like it's just 944s in general. I need to inspect the exhaust system on mine anyhow just because I haven't yet, and I'm sure putting in a hood liner won't hurt either, but beyond that, I guess that's just the car.
