The balance shaft gears both have TWO slots in them to fit over the woodruff key. Which way do they go on?

Also, I know that lots of folks (including me) run without front belt covers, but can you also get away with no rear timing cover? Yes, I realize the timing marks to line up the balance shafts are on the rear cover but I've got the block it's self marked. I had to destroy my rear timing cover and I'd rather not have to buy a new one from a lister and delay this WP/front reseal saga any longer if I don't strictly need it.

All that I have left to do is put the gears back on, time the engine, and put the belts on and if I can get away with no needing the rear cover, I can have the motor running tomorrow.

Upper shaft

Lower shaft

O for the upper balance shaft, none or U for the lower balance shaft.

Ober=upper, Unter=lower.

the gear on the upper shaft should be oriented so that, with the gear lined up with TDC mark on the belt cover, the "0" should be at approximately the 11 o clock position, visible through a round hole on the "washer plate".

the lower gear should have the "0" visible through a rectangular slot on the "washer plate" at approximately the 5 o clock position, with the gear lined up with the notch on the belt cover.

if you dont have a belt cover, on the top shaft the TDC mark on the gear should be totally vertical.

Thanks guys. Any word on running sans the rear belt cover? Maybe for only a month or two?

For future reference, notice that both key ways are upward pointing, but the lower gear's mark is downward pointing.

Question, but does the phasing of the balance shafts have anything to do with the timing of the motor? In other words, can I set the balance shaft phasing without having the engine at TDC so long as the marks line up? reason I'm asking is I took the belts off with the crank locked and I'm just going to put the belt back on and tension, wasn't planning on setting it to TDC. After I'm done I always rotate several revolutions by hand make sure everything plays nice.

And thanks Van and Spencer, the picture and description is very helpful.
